Hawkeye becomes Monsieur Shifta ... - hawkeye
The late in-laws' house needs clearing. A piano must travel from Huddersfield to Halifax and various other biggish items of furniture and musical instruments and stuff must to go to either the Yorkshire Richmond or a hamlet near Chaource, France. Out of the 5 siblings and their 5 partners, apparently I am the only one gifted enough (and with enough time) to be able organise a Luton tail-lift, a bit of muscle at the right points and drive from place to place. A quote has been obtained but one of the sisters (not Mrs H) has spat her dummy out and said it's too much.

Now I've got that off my chest I'll get to the point. What documentation do I need to transport a van-full of my late in-laws' furniture and bric-a-brac across the channel? A letter from my bro-in-law, the executor? Photographs and valuations from a local auction house? Or is this sort of thing so common that I need do nothing apart from wave my passport at Border Control and continue my journey?

Comments and advice most gratefully received.

PS [TIC on] Anyone got such a vehicle that they're not using for a week in the Summer ? [TIC off]

I recommend your local auction house for the good stuff (if any) and Freecycle for the rest.
Job sorted with no effort!

Tell the dissenting sister to sort it out herself then.

Too late, Mrs H, the captain, has said I'm in to bat on this one.

Is the piano for sale?

My captain has been banging on about one.

But you have to play Yellow Car on the way.

Incidentally, I also found this delightful insight into the Finnemore mind:

Almost as simple as the rules to Mornington Crescent!

I don't see a problem taking personal furniture across to France.

I see your biggest problem as that piano. Big time. They are really heavy. The trade shifters have a special barrow and ramps to facilitate steps etc.

I speak from experience of a baby grand and a Bechstein upright. On both occasions we got professionals in to move both from Mothers old house. The Baby grand was bought by a neighbour friend and the movers wanted an extra £300 on top of the £100 localish collect and deliver fee to take it upstairs. We dismantled it and 4 of us managed to push it upstairs, fortunately it was a straight run. Of course when we all crumpled in a heap some wag suggested it fitted better downstairs :). The Bechstein was eventually sold and again the buyer had professionals to do the job.

Excellent.

It's just an upright. I've done uprights before, including our own; I know how heavy they are. No stairs involved, just a door step or two.

My brother and I moved an iron frame piano from my mils.

Ford Transit van. Lifting straps..

The hernias were repaired on the NHS.

No, one is going across the M62 and the one in Halifax and ours in Richmond (which no-one who knew anything at all about music would want, according to Mrs H) are going to France.

Did someone mention 'scope creep'?
