Does anybody know why we say night-night? As opposed to Good night, which I guess is obvious.
Unless "we" don't and its just me and mine.

Do you mean as in 'night, night - sleep tight, mind the fleas don't bite'?

There seems to be an instinctive tendency to like repetitive sounds in certain expressions, sometimes repeating the same word, sometimes a similar rhyming word.
Said I think to be a hang-over from childhood.
Bye-bye
Ta-ta
rif-raf
chop-chop
spit-spot
oakey-dokey
and then others involving different words of the same or similar meaning:
tiny little
wee small
kith and kin
let or hindrance
will and testament

We say,
"Will you turn that chuffing PlayStation off and go to bed you little....I won't tell you again, it's school tomorrow !"
It's a sort of tradition.
