IIRC you had a familiarity with the music of the Spinners and the Five Penny Piece.
Googling the latter tonight I was saddened to note that Linda Meek died earlier this year from complications of leukaemia.
I think I remember meeting her in the early seventies via my Godmother who lived in Stalybridge.

Yeah, I fell in love with the Spinners when I was a little boy. I like a good shanty. Shoals of Herring is one of my favourites ever - Spinners covered it, written by Ewan MacColl, (father of Kirsty) but I only like the Spinners version. And of course Flowers of Manchester which always make me a bit sentimental.
I remember going to see them close to Christmas in the mid 70s and the Escort broke down on the way. Abandoned the car and legged it and just made it for the first song. My old man was a merchant navy man which is probably why Leaving of Liverpool was always on the turntable.
I was never into Fivepenny Piece though but believe it or not, I knew Colin Radcliffe. In the late 80s, he was the boss of the Tameside Tech Foundation Course in Art and he taught me. "fiddle with a pencil" was his catch phrase. And he was utterly miserable. I don't know if he's still there but two of my tutors are. I'll be in Stalybridge in a couple of months to visit my sister...
And when the hell are the Spinners going to be available on iTunes? I doubt I'll ever see what's left of them again. Cliff, the black dude, died a few years ago but I think Mick still performs.

Another Ewan MacColl number covered by the Spinners:

(The Manchester Rambler)
Remember playing that and singing along to my daughter who, at three weeks old, was wide awake at midnight 30!!
She's now 20 and a Uni student.
