Car USB charger for phone - BobbyG
I want a phone charger for the car that is longer than the usual spiral type car charger.

I believe that I will need to just get a long USB cable and a USB car charger however some reviews online suggest that you might not get enough current through to charge the phone with some kits.

So the genuine car charger I have is marked up as 700mah , if I am wanting to put, say a 2 metre USB cable onto a phone to charge, what sort of USB Car charger is required. Does the type of USB cable make any difference? Its for a Sony Xperia phone so one of the modern micro usb type connections.

Would something like this do

or do I need something a bit more sophisticated?

The phone will charge from your 700mAh car charger with a micro USB cable. Most smartphones should charge fine from only 500mAh as that is the USB standard. I have a Belkin USB charger socket in the accessory socket and it charges the phone fine.

My last phone (the same as you had... a SGS) would charge from that okay. If you used it for sat nav whilst charging it never gained any charge! It will have been using it as quick as it was charging. Perhaps a 1Ah or better charger would make a difference.

I got a 2m USB to micro USB cable from Amazon for less than that. Seems well made. In the car I have a cheaper (£1 shop) USB cable that does not have the data pins connected. Seems to work to work okay.

Nope, more or less any USB car charger and any ole length of USB cable will do the trick.

Beware. Just any usb cable will not do for all phones.

My particular Samsung has a micro-usb socket with 5pins (!) and the first two cables I bought either did not have the 5th pin or did not have it connected to the +5V when plugged into a 5V adapter. IIRC both were OK plugged into a PC usb, as that caused the phone to make a connection.

I had three tries to get one that worked in an adapter, and that one was one described on the website as a charging lead.

the 5th pin should float or be grounded. The device should still charge in either state.

I have the Experia Z and I also have one or two "compatible" cables which seem to charge it very slowly indeed. Use the original if poss.
