Did he disappear in a puff of white smoke?

Commentators describe him as a quiet modest man with a simple low key lifestyle; aditionally he is the first Jesuit Pope but that is a theological aspect of whose signifigance I am not aware

A bloomin' Argie!

Would you credit it.

More like "Are you being served". At 76, the new pope is more reminiscent of Young Mr Grace.

Have I missed something? Is Pope Francis of Argentinian origin? I thought he was Brazilian.

I didn't know that.

I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for him to mention the Falklands if I were you.

Wasnt going to. I wont be waiting for him to say anything, im not Catholic.

Argetinian born,Italian parents speaks aso fluent German he studied there.

Jesuits used to be run by the so called blackpope. He lived a simple livestyle, what is about to change I suppose. He is also a Jesuit.

Kevin!

Funnily enough, a client came round for a meeting at our house. He was early and I was snow-shovelling and I saw him park it next to the Lexus. It was a 2007 XJ, a 2.7 diesel and of course the conversation went straight to Jags. I told him I was a Jag-lover and he just handed the keys to me. I drove around for about twenty minutes as he chatted about the 5 or 6 XJs he'd had over the two decades. Shame about the damned snow though, I couldn't have a good, proper drive-test, but I felt back at home.

But the XJR is a real cracker and fantastic rear entertainment...

Tempting isn't it?

Fortunately, where I am the pope does not feature heavily in the news.

Got to go, the faithful are being called to prayers.

Can you believe it...spent one hour driving back from my local ski resort near Tahoe today and the entire 60 minutes on NPR (National Public Radio)was on this topic. Interviewing folks, religious clergy etc etc who had waited hours in the rain for white smoke. Not a single ZZ Top or Lynard Skynard song to be heard.
My CA friends are very liberal and their thoughts on contraception, abortion, going to church instead of rafting on Sunday, would not go down well with the new bloke in charge.

Matter of policy. After John Paul who lasted 1978 to 2005 the cardinals decided they want a Pope who becomes senile/incapable quickly so he can achieve nothing.

means they will always be in demand.

I suspect the tough nuts (in the Catholic hierachy) will try to wear him down - as they did with the last Pope. If he does not make significant changes in his first 2-3 years, he'll be too tired /old to make any when he's in his 80s.

That in my view was why he was selected..

From the BBC website:

"The new Pope is a theological conservative and those looking for a change in the Church's stance on abortion, same-sex marriage, and contraception will be disappointed. He is staunchly orthodox on issues of sexual morality."

Oh dear. That is all.

Up until Benedict, no recent Pope had resigned. So any appointment is basically going to be with you till death.
It therefore makes sense to appoint someone oldish that has maybe got a bit of life in them but I don't think in any walk of life, someone would be appointed to be the top boss for a life contract!
JP2 was young, non Italian and a good Pope in the eyes of catholics. But he got very old, think suffered badly from Parkinsons and latterly could not in effect do his job. A lot of his good work was undone in his latter years.

I think with Benedict resigning then hopefully this will also encourage future Popes to bow out gracefully when they think their time has come.

"Reigning monarch" would be the nearest job equivalent. The industry is now an equal opportunities employer, and like B&Q values the input from older workers.
 New Pope Elected... - Alanovich
It's coming to something when the Catholic Church is one step ahead of the British Monarchy in terms of modernity.
 New Pope Elected... - madf
There is one difference between the Pope and the Queen.

The Queen is a titular monarch. What she says or thinks is largely irrelevant.

The Pope is the ABSOLUTE Head of the Church.

What he says goes. Period. No discussion. That is it. He is INFALLIBLE.
 New Pope Elected... - Haywain
"The Queen is a titular monarch"

Is that because she's a woman?
New Pope Elected... - Armel Coussine
The new Pope is a Jesuit, the first Jesuit to become Pope.

The Jesuits used to pride themselves on being God's flying squad or SAS.

So in keeping with the vulgar frivolity of many of the posts here, I would say that while previous popes have been something like constitutional monarchs (with the extra advantage of infallibility), this one is really more like a military dictator.

I believe the old brute used the expression 'God's plan' yesterday or so, just like a crazed idiot of an American born-again or evangelical Baptist. Worrying, that.
 New Pope Elected... - Mapmaker
>>What he says goes. Period. No discussion. That is it. He is INFALLIBLE.

Common misconception. He is only infallible when he is speaking infallibly. The rest of the time he is as faillible as the rest of us. Popes make infallible statements about once per century. (There's infallible and infallible, and I don't profess to be an expert, and I think the idea that he can be infallible is somewhat silly. But I don't think we can really hold it against him thus.)

>> Maybe he's gone to photograph the Marrakesh Express

That isn't what I'd be doing in Marrakesh. I'd be heading into the hills, or perhaps further south, where quality would be better and prices lower... but never mind that.

I've never been to Morocco. I've been quite near it though, in an area it ludicrously claims and holds by force. In fact the Moroccan army tried to kill me there (not personally, just as an enemy or possible enemy in the distance... but it felt personal, the way it does when people try to kill you).

It's a long time since I was a Catholic, but I think infallibility only applies on serious matters of theology.

I believe Pope Francis I has said he supports Argentina's claim to the Falklands, like every other piece of third-world excrement with a few exceptions (including the Argentinian journalist I saw on the box the other night, a geezer with brains).

I think his Holiness needs to be asked repeatedly what happened to the indigenous inhabitants of southern Argentina. None have been seen for a very long time.

Argentina's Kirchner raises Falklands with Pope. - Zero
Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner says she has asked for the Pope's intervention in the Falklands dispute between her country and the UK.

Perhaps she would like to adhere to the Pope's ruling of 1494 dividing the New World between Spain and Portugal. No mention of Argentina receiving anything.

No mention of us receiving anything either though. :-(

Since the Argentine government are the legal successors of the Spanish wouldn't the treaty of Tordesillas tend to support President Kirchner's claim?

Don't let them know about it! ;-)
Argentina's Kirchner raises Falklands with Pope. - CGNorwich
Too late - they already know!

from Wikipedia

"The Treaty of Tordesillas has been invoked by Argentina in the 20th century as part of its claim to the Falkland Islands.[35]"
Argentina's Kirchner raises Falklands with Pope. - No FM2R
What Kirchner wants is attention diverted from the state of her country, the accusations against her, and forthcoming events within Argentina.

It would appear to be working.

Interestingly those were pretty much Galtieri's motivations as well.

Yep - classic diversionary move. Nothing like a military expedition and a bit of flag waving jingoism to divert the population from troubles at home. Good job we don't go in for that sort of thing.
