Zero's words from last month
"Word of advice H? turn off your stop cock till the burst is fixed, then on your cold mains tap (in the kitchen I guess) then the stopcock, cost there will be a lot of crap flushing through your system and you want it straight down the sink, not into your water tank (or gumming up your ballcock) "

At the time I was unable to do as Zero advised.

Today I needed to change the thermo cartrige in my shower so I closed the gate valves and did I the swop but no hot water appeared.
It turned out to be that THE gate valve for the hot water feed to the whole house had jamed shut. I bought a new gate valve and forunately the cap nut threads were the same and I could substitute it.

I had to drain the main tank ( with its bylaw 30 kit installed) so with the lid off was able to inspect it.
As Zero warned - I was amazed how much fine sand was in the tank. It all arrived via the stopcock. I go to all the effort to protect my water supply and the water board feed me sand :-(

They unblock water pipes with sand blasted in at high pressure to remove the remains of animals which decay , and the decaying remains emit gasses which blow up the corpse so they stick in the bends of the pipes.

So sand is the least of your worries.

Get enough sand in there and you have a built in filter!

Don't tell the water board or they'll charge y'all for it.

Something I remember from my plumbing course - always do up / undo gate valves to their fullest extent then back off ¼ turn to prevent them seizing up. Same with non-thermo radiator valves.

Same with all valves.

The water bored also feed you crap as well as sand. We make Tea from bottled water as it is so awful.

Yes something I ALWAYs do.
This gate valve is normally open as in best practice.
I closed it, swopped the themo cartridge but when I tried to open it all seemed OK
Then I discovered the round handle was working but nowt happening.
I guess I was lucky the handle and its shaft did not pop out.
Something broke inside and now I have it in hand the valve is firmly closed --- most odd!

I believe that most Plumbing fittings now are of such a poor quality. A mate who does most of our Plumbing says he recently bought 15mm pipe that was stamped as being 0.7mm thick (walls). He has some in stock at 1.2mm !!
