A couple of years ago at the other place there was a thread where Recorded and Special Delivery postage was discussed, and I commented that during a period of about a year I had sent three items by Recorded Delivery, and while all had been delivered, only one had been signed for by the recipient.
Since then I haven’t used this particular service, preferring to deliver by hand if local, or just putting on a first class stamp and trusting to luck.
However, more recently I particularly wanted some documents to be delivered the next day, so I opted for the Special (with this guaranteed premium service, you can be sure that, etc, etc…) Delivery Next Day Service at a cost of £5-90, but even that failed miserably and the item was not delivered until the following day. I might just as well have stuck a second class stamp on it.
Does this system work better for others forum posters?

As far as I know it’s up to £500 for the standard £5.90 delivery charge, with additional compensation available up to £2500. However, I was unable to claim for the small loss resulting from the delayed delivery, as I had not taken out additional Consequential loss cover.
I did get my £5.90 back, though.

Hmmm... we must have experienced a lifetime of luck with Royal Mail then.
Going back 20yrs Mrs F ran a mail order business where we received our orders and sent out the completed goods using first class mail, often recorded, and over a period of several years the service was.... well first class.
More recently I've been a prolific Ebay seller and buyer for years now and always send first class recorded for letter/packet sizes. Never lost an item and next day delivery has been 100%.
Regarding the items we receive Mrs F has always held the opinion that living in a rural/village location, knowing our postman and being known to the small local sorting office helps a great deal. Doesn't explain why we never have issues with stuff we send out though.

I used to work for a small charity, and one of my jobs was receiving the post and sorting it. The postman would hand me a bunch of letters with a couple of elastic bands round them every morning, and occasionally I would find a recorded delivery letter amongst them, but no signature was asked for.
On the other side, I once sent my tax return recorded delivery (it was a bit late being posted), but no-one ever signed for it. I had to call the tax office to confirm that it had been delivered. Total waste of money. I think that the issue is with big organisations that get bulk deliveries, Royal Mail can't be bothered to sort out the recorded delivery. AFAIK, Special Delivery takes a separate postal route according to Royal Mail and is tracked throughout, Recorded Delivery just gets chucked in with everything else.

I sent a couple of letters containing share certificates to Hargreaves Lansdown recorded just before Christmas. Probably didn't need to as they had no intrinsic value but I didn't want the hassle of them going missing. Both were confirmed as delivered by the tracking website with a name and an image of the signature.
