Things to do on new years day
www.twyfordwaterworks.co.uk/
Edwardian Waterworks open to the public with visiting vintage engines etc. Free vintage bus service to/from Winchester. Tea room and barbecue open.
|
A bit far from me, unfortunately. My 5 year old lad would lap that up, especially the vintage bus ride.
|
Interesting. Just about doable from here. Shall run it past the Chief Engineer. She always wants to visit that one at Leicester when we go to the Space Museum too.
Whenever there are steam days and so forth she's at the front, and all the old boys talk to me as if I know anything at all about the darned things. Makes me film the Tornado and so on when it trundles by local lines, and has a bit of a pash on Brunel etc.
My in laws used to live, when first married, in or at Twyford Mill apparently. I don't know where exactly that is but they talked of the water that ran under the floor. It was supposed to I think.
Would have been in the fifties.
|
Enough damn water round here already without going somewhere where they make the stuff. ;-)
Assuming not too heavy a night before, and the present deluges have eased ( the current forecast is for a nice day) I shall be venturing out on the 1942 Harley WLC to Cenarth, near Newcastle Emlyn, where my local VMCC section hold a New year's Day ride-in at the White Hart Inn.
Just the job to blow (or more likely, wash) the cobwebs away. Nice beer there, but I shall probably stay sensible and stick to coffee.
|
We'll be on our bikes somewhere where there are trees, tracks and hills I expect. Went yesterday in fact. Pretty gloopy in places as might be expected but not too bad.
When we lived in Scotland Jan 1st was usually our first skiing trip to Gleenshee or Cairngorm of the season if there was snow. Jan 2nd is always a bank holiday in Scotland so it was usually a nice two day break to end the holiday before returning to the grindstone.

I shall look out for you, Harleyman. In fact I may already have heard you. An interesting-sounding motorbike came up our hill earlier this morning - on the road from Lancych mansion to Penrherber.
You or one of your pals?

If 'twas around lunchtime, might have been me; though several of my VMCC colleagues would also have used that route and there was a decent variety of machinery ranging from a 1930's Morgan 3-wheeler to modern Japanese whizz-bangs.
Unfortunately the 45 threw a tantrum and started to misfire shortly after leaving home, so I was obliged to return to base and press Mrs. HM's Sportster into service. I suspect damp may be the cause of the fault.

>>Things to do on new years day<<
Go for a walk, a long walk - 2 hours minimum, come rain or shine, like I did today and I'll do the the morrow.
Came back to a bowl of home-made Butternut squash & sweet potato soup with a slice of my wholemeal bread.
:-))

First post of 2013.
Might as well.
|
First thing to do: make civil noises to the pub.
Have a good one all of you. Yeeeeeee-hah!
|
Its still 2012. The party has not even started yet!
As I have said about the South Americans before; they can't drink, they can't drive, but they sure know how to party..........
|
>> they can't drink, they can't drive, but they sure know how to party..........
... once the planet has laboured round to the proper position. But it will! It will!
Go on then FMR, sample all the goodies and enjoy them.
You aren't really a catamite by the way. Just cheeky. But I forgive you and wish you well.

Get up nice and early!

About 3 hours too early for me Pat

About 6 hours too early for me.

I hadn't gone to bed when you got up. I think it was somewhere around 04:45 this morning.

Watch the wonderful animation 'Up' tonight 6.30 BBC1
Seen it three or four times and will watch it again

You could try this..... tinyurl.com/9wrup53
I may be there, fully clothed, and not close enough to the water to get splashed by the participants.

Sun is out in Cambridge, so just did 10 miles cycling up and down the guided bus route, resolved to get back to doing some exercise. Far more breathless than I should be.

Still not got any Buses running on it yet then?
Two mile walk along the thames in the sunshine, coffee and cake in the Tilt Cafe at Hampton court.
|
>> Still not got any Buses running on it yet then?
Not today it seems, though they do run now. It isn't necessary (or permitted) to share the actual bus track.

Just the job if the weather was similar to here. Sunny and about 6C.

Of course, some of us poor drones had to work. I'd removed the battery off a Fiesta in a place called ' The Chips ' yesterday as it was flat. Took it home and charged it overnight so refitted it this morning.
The city was quieter than I've seen it for a long time and it didn't take long to do the round trip. Gloriously sunny day but cold.

And me. Off to Basel tomorrow as a passenger with a couple of engineers to bring back a poorly aeroplane. Something to do with the engine, from what I was told. Presumably not trusted to carry punters but we're expendable!

One's enough, how many more do you need?

I've been working too, but much interrupted.
|
My last neighbours left the house at 4.30 this morning, from 8pm last night.
Went to bed for a few hours, out at 10 with dog. Then back home, clear up the mess from last night, forty winks on couch and then down to in laws for their home made steak pie (Humph are you salivating yet)??
Now back up the road, a wee half hour break and then round to some friends for a few drinks.
Jan 2nd is recovery day for Scots!!!
|
Working myself today.
Friends who have a 'light refreshment' emporium are off to sunnier climes tomorrow and closing down for a week. We had to visit the aforementioned and sup up @ £1.50 a pint until it was all gone. No great hardship as the weather was pretty awful (again).
|
Spent last night/morning in a relative's house - my dear wife was working at 7.00am this morning keeping the country safe, meant an early get up for her of 5.45...so she decided not to join me. Got home around 1.30am after dawdling home the long way. Up at 8.30am - load of washing in the machine, leisurely breakfast after feeding the beasts. Started cleaning the stove including following Humph's tip. Off to town to pick up some odds and sods....fiddled around with a couple of car related tasks. Mate sent a text around lunchtime suggesting an afternoon meet on the bike. Quick walk for the dogs - had to run after the little one as he has a habit of doing a runner into next door's garden - attracted by something or other. Quick (icy) blast on the Kwaker to a MickeyD's for a Coffee. Come home make tea. Sit down in front of telly with a nice bottle of brown Leffe...

Made it back. Though turns out that today is a bank holiday in Switzerland and the locals don't appreciate two hours of high-power engine runs about a third of a mile from their sleepy village.

I can see why they like you Ted. That's the kind of thing we have to get up to as well, not strictly in the job description but by doing it the long way you get the satisfaction of a job done right first time.
|
In bed early last night; I'm a Scrooge over new year. Mrs B went over Rushden way to hear The Lad (guitar) and his friend Katie (violin) playing folk in a pub.
Today was spent with my sis and her hubby doing a belated Xmas as they were away over the festive week.
Back to the commute/work treadmill tomorrow.
|
Last night? I was watching a TV program on the laptop. Purely by chance it finished just before twelve and I was surprised by daughter, BIL & Mrs R charging into the room shouting "Happy New Year".
I'd completely forgotten about it. A big non-event for me - it's just another day, really.
|
Bit of a lie in this morning after a late night. Nice and dry. Pulled the Yam out and went for a spin to see how the new plugs and throttle balance felt after using my Xmas pressie - a Morgan Carbtune vacuum gauge, done over Xmas period. All well. Topped off with fresh fuel and stabiliser for what could be the rest of the winter period in storage. Took Mrs FC and the Retriever on a muddy walk in the countryside. Came back and washed all the mud off dog, footwear, car (inside and out) and oh the Yam, all that salt you know.
A nice leisurely day after what seems to have been a stressful and busy festive period.
|
My day started at 03:45.
I went to bed last year knowing my daughter was off to see the fireworks display in London and would get a taxi from the station to home.
Just prior to retiring for the day I did the security round ensuring stuff was switched off and then on autopilot BOLTED the front door......Doh!!!
When the mobile rang the penny dropped.

It'll happen again Dave. Second time for me now. This car doesn't get many bookings and most are 3 milers. It lives on an exposed car park and the punters always park it facing west so the engine bay gets all the icy air and driving rain.
Takes some time to re-boot the entry system as the central locking has a habit of jumbling itself up when ' de-powered '

Went down the patio steps a couple of days ago to go to the workshop and found a bunch of keys just as I stepped off.
They were wet and I thought I'd dropped a set of the Note keys the night before although I couldn't think why I'd have them out there. When I looked closer I saw it was a folding ignition key from an Audi with another key, a Tesco clubcard barcode thingy and a ' found keys ' tag.
Mystery...who'd dropped them ? I couldn't recall anyone with an Audi being at the house. Stepping out the front door later, I mentioned it to my neighbour who was in the front of his house. He knew who's they were straight away. I'd forgotten a neighbour about 4 doors down, a nice nursing sister living alone who had an Audi TT.
The day before, 2 lads had smashed the back door of her house and had been trying to start her car in the drive. A few neighbours heard the kerfuffle and challenged them. The two jumped the fence at the bottom of her garden and ran away up the field. They must have thrown the keys as they passed my place. A pretty good throw, to clear the garage and caravan and land near the house...about 60ft, I'd say.
Next door ran up the road to intercept one of them but he says he made the mistake of shouting at the lad. If he hadn't he probably would have got him.......shame, he's a big fit bloke !

Or even the 4th January.
Travel up to London on the train, sit opposite Derek Bell of all people, visit the newly revamped Dickens museum, check out places to film the LU 150 steam underground, visit the Museum of London (must be the best value around - free), eat and return.

Maybe but Derek Bell sure made that Lancer pick up its skirts...
|
Derek must love travel - other friends have met him on the ferry, and another in an airport lounge (those friends, being Le Mans enthusiasts, have struck up a conversation with him, and he seems a friendly sort).
|
When Derek Bell was driving for Ferrari he had as his company daily driver the most beautiful roadgoing Ferrari ever (to me), a 275 GTB4. He liked the car a lot but casually pointed out that it had to have all four camshafts replaced every 2,000 miles to keep it in proper fettle. How much would that cost I wonder? It's a car in which you could do 2,000 miles in a couple of days without trying.
It was after reading that that I decided never to buy a Ferrari even if I thought I could afford it.
