My favourite building and places thread. - Ted
Talking about the old station made me wonder whether there would be any interest in a similar ongoing thread about interesting places and buildings.

I'm not thinking of the Taj Mahal/Golden Gate Bridge/Great Wall here but those little nooks and crannies we've all come across and wondered about in our travels.

For instance, I know of a spectacular Victorian Mausoleum on a hilltop in Scotland. It's not visible from any road and access is only by a footpath with no signs. I've been a couple of times and have photographs.

A secret Mausoleum from my childhood.
This one was 100yards away from my childhood home.
It could only be glimpsed in the thicket from the top of a double decker bus.
It was hidden not just by foliage but surrounded by a high wall ( see second link).
The site has been cleaned up and is now open to view.
A little unusual to see the coffins in it ( see page 9 link)

Fascinating...those are just the sort of places none of us will ever find unless local.

How about a Victorian roller-skating rink with an amazing roof. For many years a builders warehouse but now a shop.

Highgate cemetary was like that when I went round it in about 1980.
You could peer into vaults through rusty gates and see decaying coffins on shelves with bones and stuff falling out.

I doubt there are many places we know that haven't already been explored and photographed by the various urban exploration warriors and put on various sites.

The ones i have done recently in the last few years, are the roof of the old 3M Building at Bracknell, the bomb and ammunition store at RAF Collyweston, the NGTE at Pyestock and the control tower and battle headquarters at RAF kingscliffe. (Kingscliffe was Glenn Millers last Hanger concert in the UK)

langdondowncentre.org.uk/index/facilities-available/the-victorian-theatre/

"It is a Grade 2* listed theatre, with the largest collection of Victorian scenery which have been fully restored, in the UK. The stage itself is only one of 2 theatres with the original Victorian side flaps still in working order"

langdondowncentre.org.uk/index/centre-history/
"The theatre itself is surprisingly large , about 60 ft by 35 ft, and in John Langdon Down’s time, it would seat 300 (the capacity today is somewhat less at 150). The balcony with an ornamental iron front occupies the back of the hall (although this is not in use today for audiences). The magnificence of the hall is without doubt, the stage. The proscenium is a notable architectural ornament and to this day it isn’t known who designed it. We know that Rowland Plumbe did not design any other stage . It is believed that Plumbe designed the carcas, and then left the details to an artistic decorator or scenic artist."

A theatre IN a large house a few minutes from Hampton Wick Station and also just over the bridge from Kingston 0n Thames.

I'm having trouble finding pictures on web but Harborne's Moor Pool Hall with its skittle alley, rifle range and player's theatre takes some beating.
