 Garden incinerator - Focusless
Now that we no longer have an old estate car for taking stuff down the tip (14 mile round trip approx), and the council charge to take green waste away, I'm thinking about getting a garden incinerator.

There's loads of these around:
www.amazon.co.uk/Bret-9051-Litre-Dustbin-Incinerator/dp/B000NE6L6A

but then I spotted this (ebay): tinyurl.com/bvcxvcc

The ebay one does't look particularly big, but at 210 litres it's over twice the size of the 90 litre Amazon type. So given it's also a tad cheaper I'm thinking it might be a better bet.

Anybody got one of either type, or any other suggestions?

(I wouldn't mind just having a bonfire, but Mrs F would, and to be fair there's no obvious place to put one. An incinerator requires less space and makes less mess - I think.)

Had one in my old place - it rusted pretty quickly. Lasted a couple of years.

You mean one of the 90 litre jobs Rob? Did it work ok while it lasted?

It was fine - The heat did for the galvanized finish. But it was OK. Well designed - classic in its own way.

I use an incinerator occasionally to get rid of stuff that I can't compost make leaf mould from or shred. Things like rose prunings, diseased plants and other woody material. I have the first type and it perfectly adequate. Use some decent dry wood to get the thing going. Don't bother with the lid - you can throw that away.

Make sure you stand it on concrete, not on the lawn like the silly woman in the second picture and not too near your house or valuable shrubs - It will get very hot glowing cherry red with a good fire . It won't last forever - about 3 or 4 years as long as you put it in your shed or garage when you have finished with it or it will rust away in no time. Wood ash is a good fertiliser encouraging plants to flower and fruit.

Don't burn plastic or other man made materials. The fumes can be nasty and the ash toxic.

Thanks guys.

I forgot to say we do have a compost bin which we keep pretty full - the incinerator would be for overflow and woody stuff.

Be careful of upsetting neighbs Re: washing hanging out in the garden, or their windows open etc.
Unless you want a knuckle sandwich like Mondeo man the other day.

I'm a little concerned the first one's made by: Keto Plastics Limited.

I've got one like your first link, 21 quid in the local hardware store, does the job fine, galvanised finish doesn't last long as already mentioned. Don't see how the one on the second link works as there appear to be few of the ventilation holes required to keep a fire going.

Doesn't matter - I've just ordered one of the first type :)

to get a bit more use out of it you could use it as a "hot Smoker", set some Hardwood chips (Oak etc) smouldering in the bottom, then either suspend, skewer or place on wire racks things to smoke, Bacon, fish, cheese etc.

LOL, if I tried that the cats would be trying to lever the lid off within minutes :-)

Bought one 5 years ago. Still going strong.. Burns everything and does not choke up with ash.

I don't think I'll be buying the house next door.

Highly polluting, I would think and it would probably not take many complaints from your downwind neigbours to get your local council calling.

You don't vaccuum cleaners and forced induction, just some dry wood!
