Three awaiting-trial prisoners from Johannesburg Prison have died after an unknown device detonated inside a police truck, blowing open its back door.
The blast, which happened at about 2.35pm on Monday at the intersection of the Golden Highway and Lenaron Road in Naturena, left 14 other awaiting-trial prisoners injured – four critically.
The impact of the explosion was so powerful it blew off the skull of one of the prisoners.
Forensic experts were combing the scene to determine the type of explosive device used.
