 IOS6 - will you won't you? - Crankcase
For Apple device owners - are you planning on upgrading in two hours time when IOS6 is released?

I'm not sure that these new fangled Apple maps are going to cut it, and will miss Google Maps.

Don't care much about losing Youtube, given you can already download that as a separate app if you want.

Don't have any interest in Passport or Siri or Facebook integration.

Not sure there's anything else of importance, is there, other than some cosmetic tweaks?

Still, I'm change resistant, my HR dept tells me, so that explains me.

Who's diving in with the update?
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - rtj70
What's the issue with Apple's maps. They won't be creating the base data for this. If they've dropped Google (who used Navteq/Nokia?) and are going with TomTom/TeleAtlas.

What iPhone do you have. Some facilities will be restricted for older devices knowing Apple. I doubt there's Siri on an iPhone 4 or 3GS since there wasn't in iOS5.

But if anyone is an Apple fan, surely you have to upgrade. It's free anyway for iPhone (will be charged for iPods probably.... so what about iPads?).
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - Crankcase
Apple maps (admittedly in pre-release) isn't getting good reviews even as recently as well, yesterday and today. Couple of examples:

www.bgr.com/2012/09/18/apple-maps-ios-6-criticism-waze/

But we'll see.

But don't forget the Google based maps did not offer turn-by-turn directions. That was reserved for Google's Android platform.

Apple didn't want to pay for that I guess and it's understandable. A comparison for static mapping between iOS5 and iOS6 is surely more relevant.

They might well have a way to go for navigation.
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - Crankcase
Mmm, good point. Not useful to me as I have the TomTom app anyway, but even so, that is a plus for Apple maps.
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - Zero
The navigation is all but useless for Iphone 3g and 4 users, and other features are missing. For IOS6 to be any real upgrade you need to be 4S or 5 hardware.
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - rtj70
That's what I assumed. I actually surprised iPhone 3GS phones are getting a variant of iOS6.

Maybe it's to convince people not to jailbreak their devices?

Given that IOS 5 more or less made 3GS hardware infuriatingly slow, IOS6 wont improve the experience.

As I am a 4 user, I am on the fence about jumping to 6 or not. Or maybe doing a, now much cheaper, upgrade to an Iphone 4S.
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - Crankcase
I'm currently using a 3GS. There are sitting in the office a few 4S units brand new and unopened But I just can't be bothered to change. I'd have to transfer the sim for one thing. Life's too short.

Maybe tomorrow. Or not.
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - Zero
Well the sim from 3GS to 4 wont fit, and the sim from 4 to 5 wont fit!

ANd i want to see how this new connector works out, a lot of car owners will loose ipod control through car audio with the new phone
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - rtj70
A full sized SIM can be trimmed to fit an iPhone 4/4S... not so for an iPhone 5.

If a car kit uses the USB interface to an iPhone then it should work with the adapter. If it makes use of the serial interface on the 30-pin connector to control it I'm not so sure. And if it relies on the audio line out it definitely won't work. It all depends on how clever the car kit is.
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - car4play
Updated my iphone last night.
If you use maps on a regular basis then this update isn't for you.
- map view is ok.
- directions look better but haven't tried them in real life.
- traffic shown as red dashes - no solid red, amber and green as per Google maps
- here's the killer - the satellite view is completely rubbish. Ok if you are in the centre of London, where you can get 3D (nice for those who can). But step anywhere south of Croydon and the best resolution is practically that which would show the whole south in one screen.
Resolution doesn't even improve over larger cities like Brighton.
- no street view - of course.

Apple must really hate Google to have replaced Google Maps with this!
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - Zero

Fear not, Google have a map app for the iphone in the works.

Interesting article hear

 IOS6 - will you won't you? - car4play
Yes, Google need to get their app out soon!

Mind you the temporary fix that uses Safari is slow and doesn't give you street view.

I also notice that if I try to use Google maps within MotionX (GPS) it gives the same display as the new Apple maps. Bing maps within Motion X are ok though.
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - Zero

I use motion x terrain maps mostly with motion x does the job for me. I guess they used the API to link google maps, and of course thats now changed under IO6.

IOS6 maps are really not popular....

 IOS6 - will you won't you? - car4play
Mind you a quick delve into maps in the states appears that they are good enough there, even in less densely populated areas.
I guess Apple decided to roll terminated Google maps as fast as practicable knowing it would hack off non-us users.
I am sure they are in the process of upgrading the sub-standard areas.

Oxford's dreaming spires and landmarks disappear under new Apple iOS 6 maps app

tinyurl.com/d6ebls8 - thisisoxfordshire

Magdalen College being in the River Cherwell, and Oxford Railway Station replaced by a Chinese restaurant.

No locations listed for the police station or the crown court.

Another gaff comes through the listing of Radcliffe Infirmary – despite it having been partially demolished since closing five years ago. And the Golden Harvest Canton Restaurant was placed in the location where the train station should be.

It was never going to be, but they had to bite the bullet sometime. And now, barring a truly cataclysmic happening, this will ensure that a year or so from now Apple is not reliant upon Google Maps.

Not straight away going on the problems I had last time (servers couldn't cope with the demand, etc).

Will wait for the rush of hardened Apple devotees to get their updates first before I attempt it this time.

Solved the conundrum. Nicole has a new Iphone 4S, I just told her she had to upgrade. She can be my guinea pig.

35 minutes update time, inc download. Seems to work OK, you'll need your Itunes id and password handy.
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - rtj70
But the download was only 4 minutes. So a circa 30 minute update. I am sorting an old 3GS for step-son. Awaiting an unlock from O2 in the next 48 hours but wondered how Apple's bandwidth holding up. Just curious.

Stopped him getting it unlocked somewhere so he could still get updates. Phone is pretty worthless being a 3GS of course.

seems to vary, it was 548 mb on Nicoles 4S
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - Crankcase
Not that I'm going to do it immediately, if at all, but how do you get the update anyway? I thought it would pop up in the app store as an upgrade? Nothing has happened along those lines.

now that not strictly true is it., you had to press some button to agree.
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - Crankcase
Absolutely not. Turned off phone last night. Turned it on this morning. Nothing, just used it as normal for satnav nto work. Just sat at desk, asked my question, you provided answer, went to settings, and says downloading, 14 minutes remaining. Touched not a button.
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - Manatee
S'funny. I had agree/disagree buttons, didn't want to proceed for now so pressed disagree.

>> S'funny. I had agree/disagree buttons,

On my iPhone4 display I got this when I went to settings, General, Software update.

imageshack.us/a/img837/452/imagelot.jpg

Not sure what happens after pressing "Download and Install" - whether you then get another "are you sure?" prompt, because I never went any further.

In short though, nothing should happen until you tell the phone to update. Presume the same with the iPhone4S.

(On a separate note, for those that don't know how to do a screen grab of the display, press the home and standby/power off button at the same time)
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - Crankcase
It's a weird combo of the above. Just got back from a meeting, and the phone has finished downloading. It now says "IOs6 is downloaded and ready to install", with an install button. Which I'm pleased about as I have the choice again.

So it did an unprompted download but a prompted install. There's a thing.

Interesting comment about the maps from the Dear Leader above - definitely going to wait and see. Although I notice if you just go to maps.google.co.uk on Safari it looks pretty much like the old app anyway so maybe it's not all bad.

Doesn't sound like the iOS6 upgrade is great. Mapping aside ;-) But everyone with an iPhone loves Apple so much that this must all be good.

I'd heard their mapping was bad... but hadn't realised it was so bad.

If they'd bought TomTom (pocket money) and used their maps properly with POI etc these would be okay. But they made a poor job of using the base map data.

And the aerial maps are a bit of a joke too. Google must be laughing. And whoever in Apple had been saying it would be okay and ready in time had better be quite senior if they want to keep a job.

That's one of the reasons why I'm holding back on installing iOS6. That happened to me during the last big update, along with losing all my apps as well.

I eventually restored everything from iTunes, but when I tried the install a 2nd time, it happened again.

btw, I use the app "phonecopy" to also back up my contacts -

Hopefully it's just a bug where a small update to the iOs will fix if it's also happening to others?

That's not bad for 3G. I get a naff signal for 3G at home. But then I used wifi instead. But 3.3Mbps is a good mobile download speed I'd say.

I would assume a fix will be released for the keyboard timing issue.
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - VxFan
>> That's not bad for 3G.

I don't have a 3G signal at home. I was quoting my wifi speed.

btw, I hate the new layout of the App store.
And just like everyone else I've spoken to about the update, the Passbook app does diddly squat. Click on the App Store button at the bottom and after a few seconds it says "cannot connect to iTunes Store" - lol

 IOS6 - will you won't you? - VxFan
>> All done. One thing I've noticed straight away is keyboard lag.

Browsing the App Store is very juttery when trying to scroll down the page. If you slowly swipe with your finger to view Apps, then it happens. However if you speed swipe the screen the Apps wizz up the screen.

Maybe I should have waited after all.

Which is why I never bothered with IOS 5 on the iPad until the apps started to demand it - then it was too late as I had to go to IOS 6 yesterday (IOS 5 not being an option). Moreover it's why Mrs I_C's iPhone 4 will remain at IOS 4 until we buy a replacement and it becomes Miss I_C's device (having made the mistake of leaving it too late to go to IOS 5 now).

Ordinarily (say with Ubuntu) I leave it at least 3 months from release before I upgrade and I wouldn't use anything from Msft until SP1 is released, oh - actually I wouldn't use anything from Msft ;-)

Thats not what I have heard.

Our IT dept at work has advised against upgrading due to various issues with IOS6 - not least the way Facebook is now ingrained...
...it seems there is a huge security issue involving the way IOS6's integration with Facebook changes the phones contact list, and adds that to your Facebook friends.... as well as changing your default Email address to your Facebook Email.... Not at all good in an enterprise environment!

Just updated the iPad to IOS 6, maps (in Aus) seem OK but YouTube has gone, I'll look forward to Google releasing replacement apps though.

Commenting on enterprise use, BB seems to be dying out quicker in Asia Pacific, my employer used to insist on BB for managers with access to sensitive data but now allows (supplies even in Aus) Android and IOS with appropriate device management software and won't define new BB users... Things have changed rapidly in the last 2 years.

The companies I work with see BB as very much low priority for their web apps, maybe this will change but I suspect the decline will continue.

Mrs I_C's iPhone 4 is resolutely staying on IOS 4 as long as it can, will look to get a cheap 4S or a 5 when the hype dies down. Was disappointed that there is no longer an option to install IOS 5 but Apple will want people off Googly stuff and for their devices to encourage them to upgrade won't they? I dunno, Mrs I_C's iPhone 4 came from our time in Hong Kong so didn't need any jail-breaking to work in Australia, I know of some American colleagues whose iPhones have become bricks when moving from the US to other countries, jailbreaking certainly carries risks.
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - No FM2R
Other than for the fun, what are the real benefits of breaking a device?

Can you do anything about its peformance, or battery life, or something?

I've considered it with the ones we have, but the risk of bricking it seems to outweigh potential advantages.
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - Zero
Well you are liberated from the locks Apple put ont he device, you can for example dump that stupid Newstand icon, you can run lots more apps from places other than the app store, you can use your device to tether and act as a wifi spot even if your provider tries to disable the function, you can change the look...

What would Google get from such an app? Apple used to pay for it. As do android Phone manufacturers. Hence no adverts. Android is fee but the apps like making are not.

Adobe is saving money going their own way remember. And are dying Google. I don't see how Google would make money from mapping on an iPhone or iPad. This might drive don't away from the iPhone. Not everyone uses making.

I'd only looked at the 3gs for someone recently. That was on something like 5.1.16. That couldn't be hacked and had to be upgraded and then downgraded. If you had a later 3gs this hack would break it. They changed the base band chip.

So if I have apps that use Google maps as the main part of their programme then I'm guessing they will stop working, I haven't been on the new app store yet so do they show both OS 5 and 6 apps separately?

They will call up the apple maps, where they might nit find the inofrmation or quality you expect.

I haven't been on the new app
>> store yet so do they show both OS 5 and 6 apps separately?

No, the map base is part of the OS not an app from the store. You upgrade to IO6 you loose google maps and they aint never coming back unless google releases an app. Seems they are in no rush.
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - Manatee
>> So if I have apps that use Google maps as the main part of their

I've just tried with the Good Beer Guide which shows a map location in the app. There's a button for "google maps" which then opens in Safari. The url is maps.google.com. It then offers to add an icon to the home screen which never happened before "An icon will be added to your home screen so you can quickly access this website". If created it just fires up google maps at that location in Safari. I've never seen the shortcut (bookmark in Applespeak) creation feature before so not sure if that's driven by the google maps site or ios6.

I upgraded this afternoon. Downloaded without installing, first. 900MB, Took about 20 minutes to do the upgrade via iTunes.

Mostly looks the same. Settings seems differently organised here and there. Main thing I will miss from Maps is streetview.

Safari has never seemed that good on the iPhone. I took to using the Chrome app quite early on. I assume there is no way to make it the default for opening links from other apps though, so they still open with Safari which is always slower to load the pages than Chrome.

I've done it anyway; but it will still be possible to check streetview / google maps via the browser, and some apps, at least, still appear to launch google maps via a loation url in a browser (e.g. the GBG).

I'm not unduly concerned about Apple maps (though the only two businesses shown in my village are a pub that closed 3 years ago, and a butchers that closed 10 years ago! The butcher's is shown with a knife and fork symbol, presumably indicating a restaurant, and the one pub that is still operating is not shown).

I think they have a bit of work to do.

I use "Outside" for OS maps, I'll be checking out Meldrew's Viewranger and M8.

Also check Uk Map which is £8 to buy but then allows full and unlimited downloads of the whole uk in 25000 and 10000 OS maps for offine use. Also renders in 3d if you wish. We used it to navigate Hadrians Wall in the summer very successfully.

Some of you may remember my missus gingerly moved over to a smartphone from her old Nokia by getting a refurbished ipgone 3GS from O2. Seemed like a good starting point for her and she is quite liking it.

However it has now developed a fault, she can hear callers but they can't hear her. It looks like there is an issue with the mic, have checked and its not the mute button and blowing on the mic doesn't give any noise to the caller.

So it will need to go back to O2 or Apple but it has this update sitting waiting and would I be correct in assuming that whether this goes for a fix, or she gets a replacement one, either way they will automatcically update it to IOS6?

From what I have read on the web, the iphone 3 doesn't really benefit from this and it slows it down by quite a lot as well as speeding up battery usage.

I am assuming that there is nothing that can be done to avoid this upgrade?
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - Zero
You can back up the IOS now, using one of the many jailbreak tools, and if it comes back with 6 you can jailbreak it back down to 5.

or follow this guide

>> So it will need to go back to O2 or Apple

The latter, IMHO.

A mate at work took his 3G back to the CarPhone Warehouse. They took an absolute age to repair it (broken screen). He found out afterwards if he'd have gone directly to an Apple store they would have just exchanged it for another 3G and then repaired his for the next person to come along with a broken phone. Obviously some money needed changing hands.
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - BobbyG
Well just to update this thread, I had to upgrade to ios 6 before they would look at it, this of course made no difference to the microphone not working.

Booked an appt with Apple store, took in, can't repair the phone and don't have any 3GS in stock so have swapped it for an iphone 4.

Hopefully the missus will be happy with that but something in the back of my mind says there were issues with 4 and thats why the 4s cam out so quickly? Was it the one with poor reception? Google time.......

As an aside, why did I feel so nervous and guilty standing in the middle of the Apple store using my Sony Ericsson Android phone!!! The blatantly obvious, and subliminal brainwashing that goes on in there is scary!!
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - Manatee
The 4 was the one with the aerial/reception problem. Not fatal though if you use a case or bumper, IIRC.
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - Zero
>> The 4 was the one with the aerial/reception problem. Not fatal though if you use

Correct. I have a 4 with bumper and its fine. The bumper also protects against cracked screen if dropped. Getting a 4 in place of the 3gs is a bonus!

Were 4's eventually rectified with this aerial problem - she will put one of the ebay bog standard silicon case thingies on it - will that be enough or was it a special bumper??
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - Zero
Any of the bumpers will do, anything to keep your finger off the metal rim round the outside. They were only fixed on the iphone 4S.

 IOS6 - will you won't you? - rtj70
But other apps using mapping will still use Apple's maps. The mapping API's will use Apple's implementation.

At least Google has done what they said they would not do. The vector based mapping is a lot better than the old tile based maps originally used. Uses less data for starters. And on Android lets you cache map segments - that will probably come to IOS6 too.

If Apple hadn't messed up mapping, I bet they would have stopped Google maps getting into the app store. But now they'd be avoiding a backlash from iPhone/iPad users.
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - Crankcase
It's quite funky. Certainly shows traffic on a route, but don't know whether/how it implements traffic avoidance. I'll find out at commuting time no doubt.
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - Rudedog
I'm still using OS5 but this Google maps app looks really good, maybe there will be a string of minor updates being issued by apps so they can link up to the new Google maps app once you've installed it.
 IOS6 - will you won't you? - rtj70
Google are releasing an SDK for other apps to use. So they will need to be rewritten.

Google maps also works on iOS5.

Well I've got it, and so far, so good. Not quite as overawed with it initially as I thought I would be (the screen was a bit smaller than I was expecting), but as I'm starting to find my way around it it's definitely growing on me...

Thought I had a major issue this morning. Turned on the laptop to start work (at home) and it wouldn't connect to the wifi. iPhone was fine, then I vaguely remembered an email from O2 Broadband saying something about iPhone compatibility. So I rang up their 0800 helpline and spent 10 or so minutes with a very helpful lady ruling out various possibilities.

Eventually she asked me about the latptop itself, and mentioned that some have a wifi on/off button. At that point I apologised profusely and thanked her for her help :)

(I turn off the wifi in the office and turn it back on when I get home in the evening, but last night I'd gone out and not got the laptop out of my bag.)

I've had my i4 for just coming up to 2 years, but I wouldn't say I was a fan. It does everything I want it to do, that's all I care about. Not one to spend 5 days queuing on the street when the latest model has been released. Plus the tarriff I'm on only costs me £12.50 a month for 500 mins, loads of txts, 1GB of data, and unlimited BT Openzone Wi-Fi access on a SIM only 1 month contact.

Funny that, never had any problem with turning off roaming on IOS5. or IOS4, or IOS3.
