 Christmas 2011 postage stamps - L'escargot
I've just found that we've got some first class stamps left over from last Christmas. Should we use them now or wait for the coming Christmas? What would you do?

If they state the price on them , use them in case price rises in next budget, if they just say first class, keep hold of them till you need them at xmas.

I didn't realise that people put first class stamps on Christmas cards. We never do.

We do. Of course it's because we never remember to send them until it's too late to do otherwise.

Well, that's not strictly true. I hate cards so now I wait to see who sends me one and if I think they'll be offended if they don't get one back I'll send them an Oxfam jobby on the 22nd or somesuch. I've never seen the point in "sending" a card of any description to someone who lives in the same house as me. My wife disagrees though. Funny like that she is.

If everyone refused to buy first class stamps we wouldn't have a two tier postage system.

You are right - we would just have a 2nd class postage system.

That would be an improvement over what we've currently got.

Do you think it is bad? Virtually all of my first class post arrive the next day. Compared with most countries its pretty good .

Yes.

The local sorting office in Oxford was shut some time ago, and all of Oxfordshire's mail now goes to the sorting office in Swindon. It adds to the delay in getting our mail.

I do not know if there are two levels of service for overseas mail? I have the following stats for cards sent abroad.

China 36 days and undelivered
Belarus 14 days
Russia 22 days
Dallas USA 10 days
San Fran USA 7 days
Rest of Europe 3 to 6 days

Until recently, France/UK and vice versa was a reliable three days. Now it's up to a fortnight.

We sent postcards from both Germany and Italy to the UK on our recent trip.

The German posted ones were with their recipients in 2 days.

The Italian posted ones were with their recipients in 3.

We thought this quite impressive on both counts. Especially so when you consider we sent a postcards from Devon to Oxford last year, which took eight days to arrive.

Last time the Hostess and I went to Tenerife, She posted cards home on the 2nd day, we had been home nearly a week before they arrived!

You were obviously lucky with the tides - if an easterly had been blowing, the bottle would have washed up in South America.
