Sir Douglas Bader - Ian (Cape Town)
Apparently he was a bit of a prcik at times, according to reports.
But he did rather well at his job, and was an inspiration to many people who'd become disabled through war and accident.

I believe that there's a statue of Sir Doug at Goodwood.
Anyone want to take a few paralympians to see it?
I've had a request from a saffer journalist at the paralympics.

There is indeed such a statue ...... photo link below.

Goodwood is a fair old journey from East London Olympic village ....and the Goodwood revival is coming up in two weeks time.

Why not get your journalist friend to contact Goodwood Group press office and see if they would be interested in helping with a visit in exchange for a bit of publicity.... especially if you can get Oscar Pistorius along.....

A pal of mine bought Bader's old Alvis open tourer at auction a few years ago. It has a Spitfire on the radiator cap.

Must have cost quite a few shillings.

Oooh, that wasn't what I lost on Woodley Airfield many years ago.

I think Baders performance was better.

Probably longer.

Muttering about getting a leg over....
 Sir Douglas Bader - busbee
Met him at a celebrity dance in East Grindstead (in the Loo!) many years ago.

What a man to fly a fighter with two tin legs. I expect you know the story of a replacement leg being dropped to him by the RAF after he was shot down and imprisoned.

Yep. the Hun had offered to allow a Lysander to deliver it - and obviously get some propaganda value out of it.
"they'll probably drop it with bombs," said Bader - and that was true, dropped from a Blenheim during a raid.

i saw him open the douglas bader home for the elderly in leicester in the 70's
ive always wondered how he operated the rudder in his mk5 with tin legs?
must have used to hip action i suppose

I know he had the clutch and accelerator pedals swapped over on his cars, as his left leg had some below-the-knee, so he could feel the pedal better.
