Over the next month I will be buying a few items - say £500 worth.
New PAYG phone £80-£100 with more computing power than went to the moon 40 years ago - all singing and dancing - tremendous value and capable of much more than I want /need but it has to look OK and not look like an old hand-me-down old tech phone.
New suit (put on weight!) say M&S - about £100-£120 should buy one of reasonable quality - wool mixture.
Car Insurance £200 fully Comp - seems good value for £20K+ car.
New car due next month, paid for with matured savings plan - It was my Jaguar retirement car envisaged in the 1980s when I took it out. Not enough for a Jag but still.
I need to but new car mats and a boot tray..............low tech, bits of material / rubber and nigh on £200..............this does not seem value.............any suggestions ?

|
The mats and boot tray sound overpriced. If this is a new car, why isn't the dealer giving them for free?

It's brand new but not through a franchised outlet!

When I got my car last October, the lease company supplied mats with their name on them. They are of poor quality. The VW dealer said there was a set of mats in the boot - they said they always provided VW mats but the lease company insist the car is provided with their mats.
I got the boot liner because they messed up the order. It wasn't expensive anyway.

FB - spending that amount it might be worth checking to see what you can get back using cashback sites eg. Quidco.

When I deliver lease cars I put the mats the other way around: manufacturers' mats fitted in the car, lease co mats in the boot :)

My local VW dealer implied that was not what this lease company want. And they supply thousands of cars each year for them so I'm guessing they don't want to rock the boat.

So you're buying from not-a-main-dealer and want the buying-from-a-main-dealer perks, like 'free' mats? At the dealer, they're built in to the price you pay, at a not-dealer, they aren't. So you have to pay for them.
Or am I missing something?

I am not expecting them for free.............just complaining of the "poor value" compared with buying other "£100 items" in the "High St".
Manufacturer car mats at say £100 - some shops will carpet a bedroom for less!
|
Ah, I see. I've bought tailored car mats off eBay before for pretty reasonable prices. Might be worth searching there for your specific model.
BTW, what is it that you are buying, if not a Jag? Surprised no-one has asked.

Just beat me to it :)

1980s retiral dream = Jag
2012 Practical Reality = Honda CRV EX 2.0 petrol Auto
Scottish winter / live on hill = 4wd
Low Mileage = petrol
Mobility = Auto

Wouldn't pay £200 for manufacturer's mats - These people do a good range.

£120 for a suit? Is Oxfam having a sale?

Marks & Spencer - everyday work suit - might be worn 1 or 2 x per year
No point is spending £300 for a suit that will be worn so infrequently / might never be worn

You're clearly not "a man of distinction, a real big spender"!

I take it the CRV is a 2012 new version? These might fit: tinyurl.com/bp9spof even though they are for the 2006-2012 models. At £57 they seem a bit of a deal.

Halfords have plenty of mats for 20 quid or so: upthear.se/halfords

Won't work on M&S Mobile; needs a bigger screen. Hope that's not a comment on FB's increased girth.

Asda do suits for £20 or so for infrequent usage
[ducks for cover from Humph]

I got mats for my Berlingo from this gent who sells on ebay.
tinyurl.com/963kfwk
or, if you like, from his own website: www.boot-liner.com/
I didn't get a boot liner, so can't comment on his boot liners. The mats for the front are very good - the mats for the back are acceptable.

Sentencing?

Tesco does very cheap suits too. I spotted the sign at self checkout yesterday.
M&S have 20% off offer on suits at the moment. A better prospect.
|
I give up. Think I'll change my sign on name to Canute.

Can't help doing the sums and being rather shocked at how little the people who made them must have been paid. ( or indeed how little the people might have been...)
|
|
I bought a pair of trousers from Sainsbury a few years ago - I'd only taken one suit for a three day business trip. I was hideously afraid of being caught short (so to speak) - it was cheap but reassuringly crappily made as well.

Demob suit need replacing, Roger?
|
Ok some facts. An item retailing at £4. Take the 20% VAT off. Divide what's left by at least 2.5 to get to what the retailer has paid for the item. Take off a few points for shipping half way round the world, some more for import duty, more again for the wholesale margin, some more for factory margin, the cost of the raw materials...
Not a lot left is there?
|
No demob suit for me! I'm not THAT old!
But I might need a suit for my nephew's wedding in January, as I'm now much too fat for my trusty old, little used, M. & S. one!
Oh- and some black leather shoes too, as I don't possess any now.
It's living in Spain for nearly 11 years - no need for suits or formal shoes.
|
Now that sounds like a challenge worth rising to Roger. You could decide that by January your old, little used suit will be a perfect fit...
