 Overeager answer phone - L'escargot
We have BT1571 and it only allows about 7 rings before activating. Even when we're in the house, quite often we can't get to the phone in that time so we get more messages than if the number of rings was greater. Are there any answer phones which allow a greater number of rings than 7 before activating?

7? Count yourself lucky - our Panasonic answerphone only allows 4 :)

Or those confined to bed with the phone next to the ear :)

Well it's taken the best part of 2 years but I've discovered how to change the 'number of rings' setting :)
Although the maximum is 7, so no point buying a KX-TG6521 L'es.

No idea, but think laterally and you can solve two problems (blocking unwanted calls and getting to your phone quicker) in one:

Buy a set of two, three or four Panasonic cordless phones, eg. these last year's Panasonic models on offer

trio KX TG8523EB

twin KX TG8522 - you missed this bargain at ASDA

My answerbone rings for 18 seconds:

Our separate BT machine has a maximum setting, which we use, of eight rings, so we can leave it permanently on and still have 30-40 seconds to get to it before it picks up. There's also a button to toggle it on and off if we ever want to. It's still possible to interrupt it after it's picked up, which probably isn't possible with 1571.

My 1571 service includes a facility to select long/medium/short ring or immediate answer. We pay a quid or so a month for facility. May be different on the free version.

That's more like what we need.

Nice little cordless, L'es, I've always chosen Panasonic cordless bones before, but I'm well pleased with the Siemens.

Doesn't 7 rings take about 18 seconds anyway?

Err, 7 double rings (burr, burr) :}

Yer - I thought it would be about a couple of seconds per double ring. Must be a spec somewhere...

Quite a while ago, I read somewhere,(think it may have been on the blurb that came with our Ansafone), that it was "set at a maximum of 7 rings, as research had shown that most people hang-up at 8 rings if they don`t receive an answer. The machine cutting-in at 7 meant that most callers were offered the option to leave a message before they hung-up unaware of the answer-phone being present.

Even though our machine goes into auto-answer mode after 4 rings, the advantage over 1571 is that you can still pick up at any time after that as long as the caller is still on the phone ie. either listening to the recorded message or recording a reply. AFAIK with 1571 once the phone stops ringing, that's it.

BTW we would have been happy with 1571 if we could have had it

I've heard they have invented small "mobile phones" that you can keep in your pocket. Sounds a nifty idea. They might catch on :-)

The signal strength hereabouts isn't good enough to be relied on.

A geriatric septuagenarian snail.

My old man has an answerphone machine which picks up after 6 rings. As he's often in the garden (without taking the cordless handset with him) he'll hear it ring from the house, decide he's not going to make it indoors within 6 rings and just carry on with what he was doing.

I know this, so I don't leave a message.

He knows I know this, so after he hears no message being left he'll go and fetch the handset outside. I know he does this, so I ring him again about a minute later. Works every time :)

...

I have 1571, and can frequently be seen trying not to break my neck thundering down the stairs 3 at a time before the 6th ring :(

It's bad enough for us without any stairs!
 Overeager answer phone - WillDeBeest
Couldn't the person who can see you on the stairs just pick up the phone for you?

Haha, brilliant. That's pretty much what happens here.

We have a cheapie Alcatel cordless phone and you can change the number of rings before the answering machine cuts in. Trouble is, if I put it on French message the Brits panic and hang up and vice versa if I put it on English message.

The obvious answer is to get that Policeman chappy off "Allo-Allo" to record your Answerphone message!
Overeager answer phone - Cliff Pope
It would sometimes be useful if the caller could just cut straight to the answerphone and leave a message, without it ringing at all.

Overeager answer phone - No FM2R
"This is Mark, leave a message, dejar un mensaje."

No time to panic. Half the complete ***** that people leave on an answer phone is just irritating.

Give me enough to make it obvious I've got the right number, then let me leave a message. I know you can't answer the phone right now, of course I'll leave you my name and number, and if I don't then telling me to do so won't help, I know you'll call me back just as soon as you can, and I will have a nice day.

That's all implied, or at least assumed.

Its also irritating and boring.
