 Hotel Recommendation - Nearish Morpeth - rtj70
I've been doing some searching for hotels to stay at the end of the month. We've got two night in Durham and visiting family in Morpeth. We've decided to go for an extra night and ee a Sunderland home match on the Saturday. So I need a room.

Anyone care to recommend one that's cheap but decent between Sunderland and Morpeth. It might be nice to visit Newcastle but only if it's not an expensive hotel.

Someone will no doubt suggest iffy rents out his caravan for a night ;-) I think that's nearby.

The tin box is 60 miles down the road in North Yorkshire, so not much use.

If you are stopping in Durham City that's only 12 traffic-free miles from Sunderland, so there doesn't seem much point in stopping somewhere else for the third night.

Durham is also handy for the A1(M) for your journey home.

If it has to be somewhere else, be wary of cheap hotels in Newcastle - often full of stags and hens.

Sunderland itself is still run down despite large investment in parts, Morpeth is out of the way in Northumberland, so I still think it comes down to Durham for accommodation for the football excursion.

I like Morpeth. Good hardware shop - Smales? Some decent beer and I got a haircut for £6 IIRC.

If no specific recs come up here I have a pal in Longframlington I can ask.

On a quick Google, the Queens Head Hotel in Morpeth looks interesting.

Good idea to visit Newcastle, I'll be there in about a week.

We'd have stayed at Durham on the first night but the hotel we're in (just outside Durham) didn't have any rooms for the Saturday. We have a voucher for a discounted stay for two night. But since the Sunday is when we go to Morpeth (and then stay Sun/Mon in Durham) it made sense to stay somewhere on the way from Sunderland to Morpeth.

Had looked at the Inn Keeper's Lodge at Cramlington but it's full. There's plenty of cheap hotels but I suspect they are full of loud drunk people on Saturday nights for various occasions.

One hotel that appears cheap (remember it's just for one night) is the Quality Hotel Boldon. No idea what it's like but I once had to stay at the Quality Hotel in Birmingham and that was the worst hotel I've ever stayed at! No quality about it.

It was destroyed by fire a couple of years ago, I take it it's now open again.

Brother stayed there a few years ago, there was nothing wrong with it then.

Handy location just off the A19.

Thanks iffy - might book it and not need to call/bother you :-)

Going to check out Uni accommodation which was an idea earlier.

Stuff about the fire here:

Big news at the time, because sprinkler systems, non-flammble materials and other regulations have made a proper fire a rare event.

Explains why it had a refurb then. Might risk it.

Stuff about it's rise from the ashes here:

As you can see from the address, it's on a business park so will be nice and quiet in the evening.

There's one of those modern pub/restaurants nearby if you fancy going out for a cheap meal.

Other local amenities include an enormous ASDA, and a BMW garage which sells both cars and motorbikes.

I always use the visit britain site: www.visitbritain.com/en/GB/

You know they've been inspected and reach some minimal standard.

When in that part of the world I always try to stay here

www.beamish-hall.co.uk/

Nice and quiet and often good value if you use booking.com or similar

About 5-8 mins off the A1 and 20 minutes into Gatehead even in the morning.

As always

Looks nice. But it's already going to be an expensive(ish) weekend. Two nights already elsewhere, diesel, two tickets (plus parking) at Sunderland AFC. So might stick with what I've booked.

Free park and ride at Wessington Way, which is quite handy if you are stopping at Boldon:

Thanks. Not looked at parking yet. That was next but this is handy.

I've used the park and ride a couple of times, works well.

The CC will be OK, and you will be able to listen to the various Wearside and County Durham accents on the bus.
