Nice bit of English. - R.P.
Waiting for a parcel. Checked the online tracking service, I was pleased to see that it had left the "Sortation Facility" - what's that...?
Nice bit of English. - Zero

I think "facility" is something to do with something being easy. From the French "facile".

"Sortation" I can't help you with.

From an online dictionary:

sor·ta·tion  [sawr-tey-shuhn]
noun

1. the process or result of sorting things, especially computationally or mechanically.

2. classification of things

I don't see a difference from sorting.

I'm still struggling with transportation instead of transport. It's been in use in UK since at least 1975, so not new.

You'll like this then DE - example of use from dictionary.reference.com/ :

Lift and unload containers of mail or parcels onto equipment for transportation to sortation stations.

The Royal Mail lot advised me of an item at the Esher Office.
Out of interest ,the tracking system agreed - Esher.
One small problem . The whole Esher site and more was flattened some months ago, which I was well aware of.
The nearest site is now some miles away and I had already visited it.

I sent them an email suggesting they update their data base.
I got a high standard reply ....Esher office.
Further emails said Esher and Molesey.... but still no change to the database.

Monkeys / peanuts :-(

It's similar to a Sortation Hub.

"Interlink Express operates a state-of-the-art sortation hub in Birmingham."

I knew what ut was it was the wholesale abuse of the language that tickled me. What next. "Your package has been sortated on to deliverization van" ?

When working as a secretary (remember those?) I had a boss who used particularly florid language in letters - to the stage when the actual point of the letter was lost. It didn't take him long to realise that the typed letter was not as dictated .. after a short while he would just say "Please could you write to X about Y".

I thought sortation was where they separate the Special Delivery items from the ordinary stuff that they're allowed to steal.

They probably used 'sortation' in place of 'Sorting Office' so that you did not get confused and contact Royal Mail.
