I recently bought some Verbatim double layer +R disks to record films orf the telly.
I sat down to watch Gladiator last night and when it got to about 58 mins in, the blimmin went belly up.
On examining said 8x DVD+R DL disk, I see it is quite badly scratched:

No-way was I responsible for that damage as I handle all disks with care, so,
Could they have been damaged in production, or could my LG DVD recorder have caused that in some way when I FF on past the adverts (nah, stupid idea that is)
Are dual layer jobbies more trouble than the standard DVD disks, like the ole C120 Cassette tapes of old
(another stupid question) :)

No its not a stupid idea. The scratches look like DVD player/recorder induced. Xboxes produce similar scratches sometimes.

I've checked another disc in the box and that's OK, I'll record on that disc and see how it goes.
Never had any probs before, with the LG recorder or Verbatim RW discs.
|
I notice you are using +R discs, Nothing of mine will play them, I`ve got to use =R, Wonder why that is? - Maybe your LG wants them as well!
|
I've gorn by the instruction booklet devonike and the only dual layer discs it recommends are +R.
With single layer jobbies I usually use DVD-R though.
Having given the matter much thought, I reckon my machine caused the scratch that can clearly be seen in the foto, and it obviously occurred when I was skipping (not FF) past the blimmin adverts, how it occurred though is another question altogether because the info is read by Laser after all!
|
is it still under warranty? i would get that replaced, if not is it possible to replace the dvd mechanism for a similar one ?
I use verbatim best blanks all around
|
>>is it still under warranty?<<
Nay lad, I bought it for £50 on ebay (refurb/graded) some years ago to do the job of my defunct VCR.
I have tried these ere PVR marlarkeys but couldn't get on with them, so I'll Percy Vere with the DVD and if it doesn't do the biz, I'll buy a proper one (Panasonic)
|
Eh, I might even update the critter to one of these for 80 squid, its even got HDD now!
Its only got one tuner, but that suits me as I hardly use the thing.
These are the peeps I bought my previous LG from = good Co. goo.gl/flxKO (ebay)
|
Yeah, the flexible circuit board connecting the laser to the rest of the gubbins in my Insipron 6000's optical drive used to scratch disks, often as not. Fixed with a bit of Sellotape.
|
I just tried another Verbatim 8x DVD+R DL disc to record The Day After Tomorrow orf the telly and its done the same thing as when I tried to record Gladiator a couple of weeks ago.
I've checked the disc and it looks OK, so I'm thinking the problem must be that my machine doesn't like dual layer DVD's.
It's always been OK with single layer DVD's so I'll probably out the critter as it only cost me about £50 4 years ago.
Blimmin annoying though as I was enjoying the film, like I was with Gladiator, such is life!

I'll tell you how they end
"Everyone dies"
Ok?

I doubt that Zed, I like those kinda films though, so I'll have to get it on Blu-ray via Lovefilm.

You sure? There's more than one version you know.
|
Get it here! tinyurl.com/bntv9rf You'll need Utorrent (it's free) to download if you don't have it already!
|
>> You'll need Utorrent
Other BitBorrent clients are available :-) If Dog's desperate I have this to 'lend' but it sounds like he can get both from LoveFilm.

Thanks to Dodger & Rob, I don't know what I'm going to do about it, yet, I'll probably get them from Lovefilm as I prefer to watch films in Blu-ray, and I need to top up my list anyway.
I'm more interested to understand just what is going on with my double/dual layer DVD recordings.
No problem at all when using single layer DVD's, but as soon as I try to record on the 240 minute jobbies I get the same problem that it gets to a certain point on playback and then sort of sticks, not un-like an old vinyl LP.
I've thought that its where the DVD starts recording onto the 2nd layer, dunno, I'll have to see what info I can find on the web.

Goddit:
"Sometimes when burning the burner will have difficulty switching between the layers to record on the second DVD layer. When this occurs and the DVD is played back, the movie will freeze when the layer switch occurs".

Sorry to point out the obvious, but a few months ago my DVD recorder started to act up unpredictably after a couple of years good service.
A colleague gently suggested a complex process called "insert a three pound DVD cleaning disc", which of course I scorned but did anyway.
Worked again perfectly since, so far.
Don't think it's going to solve Dog's problems, but other silent observers might benefit. You never know who's reading your words.
|
But, were you using dual layer DVD's Cc? I'll try a cleaning disc anyway, for what it costs.
|
I don't know if they are dual layer, actually without looking, and I can't right now.
All I know is they work, they're branded DVD-RW discs, and at lowest resolution the DVD recorder will do they take a four hour recording. But of course I set the player to the highest possible quality for the programme, which is almost never more than an hour and a half.
Then I transfer the contents to the PC for archival (and playback to the TV) purposes and erase them. Reused them lots of times.
Works for me. Final quality is somewhere between VHS and a DVD I suppose, but it's adequate for our purposes.
|
I'm thinking HDD (PVR) is the way to go Cc, I did try one once, but the fan noise annoyed me.
But then there is a fan in my Plasma telly, and I can't hear that so mayhap things have moved on a tad :)
|
Sure thing. The reason I do it my way is I'm not limited by the size of the drive in a dedicated player (I can add lots of storage to my PC) and of course I can back up easily, as well as edit out the commercials or whatever.
Depends how long you want to keep stuff. We, no doubt illegally, still watch stuff from time to time we recorded in the eighties that has been transferred to this system.
|
The reason I chose a DVD recorder in preference to a PVR is that being an old geezer and semi-Asperger, my thinking was that having something physical like a disc is not-too far removed from having a video cassette.
But having nothing - as in a PVR box, well, its just 'not on' really!
:-)
|
I should be watching more films. We got that many DVD's.I have a blue ray dvd player.
Semi Asperger you sound like Lud.>:)
