Bed-bugs, pest control - bathtub tom
Any pest control experts out there?

We've just got back from holiday and realised our mosquito bites aren't. They're bed-bug bites (never experienced them in sixty-odd years).

We've unfortunately had the suitcases in the house for a couple of hours, but have now deposited them outside, along with shoes, rucksacks and anything else we think could be carrying them.

All clothing is going through the washing machine.

Any suggestions on what we should treat, with what and how would be much appreciated as we don't want to have them in our home.

no idea, but let us know where you were so we can avoid it.

Hope that your holiday was enjoyable despite the infestation.

Thinking back to a previous life I would suggest that you've done well to launder your clothes, but hopefully they are on a very hot wash. It would also be wise to vacuum your suitcases, ruck sacks and anywhere that the bugs may have gained access to. Bed bugs are nocturnal creatures and like to hide in dark places, crevices and cracks so when vacuuming do lift up everything and be thorough. I would empty the vacuum cleaner immediately and dispose of the contents.

If you are itchy try not to scratch, use an anaesthetic cream or calamine. Wash the area of the bite with soap and water and if the bites are really bad then you can always use ice.

Hopefully you will have eliminated all the bugs (you'll know if you receive fresh bites tonight), but if not then unfortunately you might need to call in the local environmental health pest control service or a private company to treat your bedroom or the area where the suitcases have been.

Hope that this helps and if it's any consolation bed bugs don't carry disease they're just incredibly irritating.
