Quite a lot in papers today about this (which I read on train after following experience!)
www.telegraph.co.uk/news/9316366/Four-in-ten-rail-passengers-pay-too-much-for-train-tickets.html
Was at Exeter needing to get to Cheltenham. Went to quick ticket machine and was quoted £68. Thought that a bit expensive (!) so went to ticket office.Conversation went roughly as follows.
"Good morning, how much is a single to Cheltenham with senior Railcard?"
"It's £34.50 Sir"
"But I looked it up on The Trainline last night and it said about £22"
"Yes Sir, but that would be booking in advance and off-peak and with a railcard"
"Yes but The Trainline said it was no cheaper to book in advance and it is now off peak and you have seen my railcard"
"Yes Sir, but it is £34.50"
"OK, What if I bought a ticket to Bristol Temple Meads"
"That would be £16.45 Sir"
"And a ticket from Bristol Temple Meads to Cheltenham?"
"That would be £5.35 Sir"
"So that makes a total of £21.85 from here to Cheltenham?"
"Yes Sir"
"I think I'll do it that way then - do I need to change trains at Bristol"
"No Sir, take the 10.23 from platform 5 for Glasgow"
"Thank you for your help"
Is there any wonder train fares are confusing??
Could have paid £68, ended up paying £21.85

As usual there was an interesting article in Private Eye a few weeks ago on this. A total nonsense... My God daughter regularly travels long distance by train, she economises by getting bite size tickets in that fashion.

Yep, we often meet friends in borderlands between Wrexham and Chester.
Euston to Chester via 17:10 on a Friday is peak fare. However, my season covers Euston to MK. Separate tickets MK to Nuneaton and off peak Nuneaton to Chester reduce cost from near £100 to £40.
