This has been going on for quite a while now, but after the latest fighting it appears there is more pressure from outside. I'm not sure whether Assad will stay or not.

Assad's position is similar to that of Saddam Hussein. A 'strong man' ruking by terror in a country with an esoteric mix of tribes/races/religions and who is himself from a minority community. Some reports of the weekend's outrages suggest an ethnic element in the killer's motivation.

If/when Assad goes civil war seems likley.
