We don't know any of this is true.
Perhaps he was a a genuine bomber who was detected and allowed to escape to Saudi Arabia. The point would be to cause Al Qaeda to suspect all their trustworthy operatives might be double agents. It's a careful fiction concocted by US/MI5 to pretend that he was a double agent and then to leak the "fact" deliberately.

Or have I been reading too much John le Carre?

The wonderful Matt's front page cartoon on yesterdays Telegraph, about the Greek Finance Minister attending the bailout summit wearing those pants, wasn't up to his usual standard. Today's, the good cop/bad cop demo, is a masterpiece.
