I know there has been mention of Stu, DP etc but is it worthwhile trying to list who is missing from the old regular gang and see if anyone might have email adresses for them through previous private correspondence? Of course some may not want to come, some may be here under different names and want to keep it that way!
I will search through my archives, I am sure I contacted Stu at one time with a valeting query but not sure.
|
I was wondering the same thing.
Since DP was a mod, he must know of this site.
I'm sure Stu did a job for one of the others, so that person may have an email address.
I might have missed them, but others I've not seen here include Harleyman, b308, jbif, Stuartli and woodster.
And is Bill Payer with us? Or Tack?
Any more for any more?
|
I have Guy's email addy, if he isnt already here... XJS guy that is....
|
DP probably knows about this but was only briefly a mod before the problems on the other site.
Guy is not here yet. Some people I knew the email address of like DP were told where we were. It might take time for people to read emails and check here.
Keep the names coming because maybe someone on here knows their email address and can invite them.

Have searched and can't find Stu's email address. Was sure I had emailed him but obviously not.

well... I think I have messaged stu, I could be wrong, but im sure I, if not everyone, will soon find out.
Google is my friend. (I hope!)

The message I got went into my spam - I guess that tells you what Yahoo! thinks about this place. ;>)

How's about Brentus + pete&hisgolf + HJ - are they AWOL as well?

Sorry if I've missed something, but what about the BR's resident Focus RS driver?

Hi,
I have just registered, bit busy for much contribution to forum sat moment.. still love the XJS, treated it to a really thorough clean and polish the other day and covered it with my new tailored StormForce cover from Just Roadster, next day the heavens opened!!!! reason for the effort is that I was about to go overseas for 2 weeks - I am sitting in Kuala Lumpur writing this.
Thinking of treating it to this:
classic-transformations.com/transformations.html
Got a quote for a days "detailing" work, engine bay then moving to rest of car depening on time left (he charges for the day)... he has come highly recommended.
Am I going soft?
Guy
|
Welcome Guy,
Great to see you here! hope you have a great time in Kuala Lumpur.
|
...Welcome Guy, Great to see you here!...
Yep, there's plenty of room this morning.
I've seen one man lurking around, now all I need to find is his dog. :)
|
Looks like the chap does an excellent detailing job to me and as he charges by the day you both know where you stand on charges.
Oh and welcome to the madhouse
|
Would like to see Workshop Tech here.
|
I'm fairly sure Stu lived in either Church or Chapel Brampton. Searching for car valeters in that area produces a return with the initial S but no email/web.
If there's a mobile number I might try a speculative text.

No - there was some sort of poetic resonance to your new nickname.

Yes, I'd echo this - as a non-techie (hence frequent reader but rare poster) I've found WT's contributions very illuminating. Any chance of one of those mysterious email tip-offs...?

jbif. The site is yet young, but it needs a proper, mandraulic search function.

Yes, i'm afraid it's me! it might be a new site but it feels just like the old days again!
Thanks for the warm welcome!

Indeed - welcome back Adam! The nice thing about this forum is that most of the people I think of as friends have come over. It'll be interesting to see what happens when HJ's site is resurrected: with luck there'll be room for both.

The problem for HJ as I see it is, the longer its down for, the less chance of old members going back.
I think there ia room for both - after all there are at present many motoring forums - BUT the longer its away, the more chance of its direction / feel etc, will change, maybe that will be a good thing for him, maybe it wont.
I know that I was checking HJ for updates daily, now? Im down to every few days, if I remember....

has anyone rung him up to make sure hes ok?
he might be stuck in his bath or something

>>>The problem for HJ as I see it is, the longer its down for, the less chance of old members going back>>>
HJ will always have the huge advantage of his Sat Telegraph profile... and that fact that... all credit to him... he's established something of a brand. That's why I was always sad to see he seemed to encourage a forum character/feel that wasn't always the best.
It is quite likely though his new forum will re-establish in a natural way just from folks who click through after looking at the main website for car info.
I am one of those who found this place from it's earliest moments and am pleased to see it's here... but I'm under no illusions that the 30, 50,100 or however many folks that have transferred here are in any way crucial to the new HJ forum being a success such that if they (we) don't return it will somehow fail.

I wonder if there is a demand for two forums appealing to 'people like us'.
I will not even read a forum where bad language is allowed, and I like to see a reasonable standard of spelling, punctuation, and what could be termed an 'adult' standard of debate.
This cuts out about 99 per cent of the internet population.
'My' forum needs to be busy enough to be conversational, and not too garish in layout.
This cuts out about 99 per cent of internet motoring forums.
The old Back Room was the only forum of which I was a regular member.
I spent enough time there, and do so here, so can't see me posting to both.
|
My guess is that the forum ranks fairly low in HJ's list of priorities. Being an enthusiast himself he likes it and has encouraged it, but I don't think he always has time to scan it fully himself, and I doubt if on its own it is a big earner. This is all surmise however.
Unlike some others I don't mind a wide variety of poster types and am fairly tolerant of a measure of rudeness and bad language, while understanding that sensitive plants and people of very sheltered upbringing are, or pretend to be, shocked by such things. So I don't give a damn about people who can't spell or punctuate if what they say has some interest, and being choleric myself am not surprised when people get angry and return insult for insult.
I didn't always agree with the HJ moderators but on the whole they seemed well-meaning and ran a decent shop. I look forward to the site's return with interest.

snipquote - no need to quote the whole post Cliff, a brief summary is sufficient, thanks
I can't help noticing that this forum works perfectly wherease the old one was plagued with technical problems.
Yet it is I understand simply the body shell of the old one, saved from the scrappage scheme and rebuilt with a few used components from a scrapyard?

Are we talking about the same "old one"?
Not much rebuilt on this one apart from the widget thing on the RHS, email notifications and a few under-the-hood kind of upgrades.
|
I think (and hope) they are referring to the HJ site as the old one ;-)
No naughty adverts on there yet though! Check your email.

Yes, I was. I understood that it's operating system or whatever it is called had been sold off as a job lot, hence the familiar look of this site?
Yes, exactly like putting on comfortable old shoes. Or, as the welcoming messages say, like walking into an old familiar pub. All the old comfortable seats and settles are there, they've left the real log fire, all that's changed is the horrible intrusive games machine has been thrown out.
|
I've emailed NC, hopefully he'll turn up.
|
Ha! bet you all thought you`d managed to lose me!! - you`ll have to try harder next time! i was a boy-scout (a bit ago now tho) and used my tracking skills to get here. changed my reg to outwit you even more, - maybe should change it to Pimpernel!
|
Where's Rattle - broken down somewhere?
I see Oilrag is still raving away to himself on the old site, not having noticed everyone has quietly slipped out of the room.
Lud here yet? I hope he's managed to shunt the mimsers and carphounds out of his way.
|
They are all here. You've got a whole site to read to catch up.
Rattle's started smoking as well so in the process of buying a new car.
Oilrag is holed up offshore and posting to both sites.
Lud is now Nouvelle Cuisine is something similar. I don't know why, I might ask one day.

I was touched to be invited over by someone who's bigger nd badder than they used to be!
Good day to you all.
|
Well well well !
I wondered why all the old stalwarts were not posting on HJ and only found this site due to a mention of there being another site. Of course the name was not allowed to be mentioned so you lot took a bit of searching out.
It,s a bit like putting on those old comfy leather shoes !
|
>> Of course the name was not allowed to be mentioned so you lot took a bit of searching out.
There are a few cryptic clues dotted around I gather. Also google got hold of them actually giving us a mention on their front page of the BR forum - lol
See tinyurl.com/car4play
It's in the "latest links" column over on the RHS, "titled Car 4 play mentions".
Welcome, btw. Sorry the ferry that brought you across the murky waters was a bit slow. It is in need of a service after the many miles it's covered these past couple of weeks.

yes good point
i feel he got the same as many and decided that you can help the few but not the many and hung up his spurs
even i stopped posting on hj tech after being called a bright spark on an astra non start question

With 'Workshop Tech' other previous aliases he might be here already. It will be April soon so he might turn up before spring.

I suspect that some have changed their names to try to lose/hide their former personality. However, a leopard can't change its spots. The style of their posts, their demeanour etc is unaltered. The clues are all there!
|
>> >> I suspect that some have changed their names to try to lose/hide their former personality.

Well, I for one am on here under a different name.
Reason for changing? My old 'name' wasn't a name at all, I felt that getting in early enabled me to choose a name that was more user friendly.
|
hi all , just moved across , found you all in the end , regular reader but not much of a poster , hopefully i might interract a little more now :)

This is all comfortably familiar and so much better than what HJ's Backroom turned into. I have cunningly metamorphosed from a handle that was connected to a car that at one time you could only get in black to one of its Japanese equivalents. Sadly nobody expressed an interest in whether I was still about but I am and I am pleased to be back among familiar names (well, most of them anyway).

Well very nice to find you all. Some kind soul sent me an invite - thanks to whoever that was.
I had absolutely no idea this site existed and I nearly deleted the invite e-mail without reading it.
Anyway, it says on the thread: 'Introduce yourself', so I will: 45 years old with 2 young children and living in a very small village in East Herts, working in Essex in one of those so called 'new towns'. Doesn't it sound dreadfully drab to say I drive a Golf? It fits the bill and gets driven in the style my employer taught me. I think the regulars have worked out my occupation by now, although I don't think I've ever actually said what it is. Not on the shop floor, as it were, couple of rungs away, but still firmly in touch on a daily basis.
I've missed the exchanges and opinions on the old forum, annoying as some of them can be at times! Looking forward to some more when I see a topic I can't resist chipping in with.
Hope you and yours are healthy and happy. Regards to all.
Oh, by the way, I'm posting on here at 1-40 a.m. coz that's when some of us get home from work!!

Thank you for the invite, whoever it was. Looked in on the HJ site to find it bereft of the most surprising people. Had missed my daily fix of advice, banter and above all, the wit!

Hi all, and thanks to whoever sent me the invitation, not to mention thanks to everyone else for not blackballing it ;-)

The familiarity is magic.

Well I'd just about given up with the old guard, tried all types of searches all to no avail and something out of the blue directed me here tonight. Well pleased to see so may old handles and I promise to contribute more often and more usefully than I did in previous life.

I stopped (rarely) contributing to the other side a year or two back for various reasons but still could be found lurking around from time to time without actually posting anything. Recent lurking has been very, very disappointing.
It's a cold and miserable weekend; not one for going outside. I'll just lurk here a while now and maybe poke my nose in when I can offer something worthwhile.

Wilcommen Herr Dulwich, I specifically remember your handle as I used to go to William Penn School in Dulwich + my Sister lives in said London suburb.
|
Newly arrived. I was a long-standing member of and frequent visitor to the old HJ site, but posted infrequently. Sadly, the forum is not the same without the old sweats. I positively beamed when I saw the familiar names. Who knows, I may be stirred to post more frequently.
Mr Tickle.
|
Welcome Mr Tickle. Did you come alone, or did the rest of the Mr Men motley crew follow you through the tunnel ;o)
|
Hi Folks, Just found you with the help of ChrisPeugeot.
Kept my old naff name so people will remember me (and avoid? ;)
Nice to see some old names here!
|
hi sfd
updates needed........................... :-)
|
One I miss is that old stirrer NoWwheels but think she got chased off! I wonder if HJ comes here also or was it an ugly parting (don't know the history between the parting of the ways)
|
HJ very rarely posted on his "own" forum so doubt he will join here.
|
Nice to see some of you've missed me..... but unfortunately I'm back!
|
Strangely I noted your absence today and was wondering how to contact you - some telepathy hopefully.
|
...Nice to see some of you've missed me....
Harelyman,
'Missed' might be putting it too strongly, but I'm looking forward to some decent contributions on matters motorcycling, the countryside and trucking.
|
As others, a subsequently-deleted message gave the game away. This is where everyone is.
I found the other site a bit stale and turgid even before the software upgrade. In fact I quite enjoyed it while it was read-only since most subjects this side of oblivion had been discussed many times. I would imagine the Mods also quite enjoyed it, not having to edit some of the more witless diatribes.
|
Not much editing goes on in here either ! Welcome Snowy - we missed you.
|
It is a great treat to be here. This reminds me of what the HJ site used to be like.
Did I see Screwloose around?
Shame we can't entice Aprilia back. And what about No FM2R? :-)
|
Screwloose is here and there - no contact details for Aprilla - doubt that NFM2R has been around either site for years.
|
Driving through Leamington on Sunday reminded me of NFM2R.

Not really else I wouldn't have quit. There was actually more work to do when the site went read only in trying to restore service back to normal.
Welcome, btw.

Hello folks. Sorry, been a bit tied up.
Will try to show up a little more often.
Legacy still doing its thing. Wife's Freelander starting to send ominous signals though. Might be time to get rid. Yaris going fine. Series III staring at me daggers every morning. I try not to look it in the eye.
