My dad never learned to drive - no point, as we couldn't really afford a car. I can't remember ever feeling disadvantaged by this fact, though.

I guess it would make some folk today feel like a second- or even third-class person.

2 x Austin Maxi, I learned to drive in the second, a 1750HL

As Oldsock I never felt disadvantaged either

He then bought a k reg Volvo 440 (loved it)
Then a “m” Reg 440
Then various Nissan Almera’s
Now got the Focus "the best car he has ever owned"

Nice list Boxsterboy... mirrors broadly the type of vehicles I was surrounded with when younger... except Dad never got Citroens untill quite late on so I had to do the honours with DS/GS/CX/BX myself. And we never had the Aston Martin but a friend did have a met purple DB6 which made me drool in my late teens.
 My dad had a .......... - Boxsterboy
Just remembered, dad also had:

Renault 16TS - an early one with a distinctive (nice) french plastic smell about the interior.
Aston Martin V8
 My dad had a .......... - Fenlander
Some folks think we've done well to own 67 cars... the following will show where I got the habit. About 10% of these were Mum's.

As far as I can remember...

Ford Cortina Mk.1 1500
Vauxhall Victor 101
Hillman Imp
Vauxhall Victor Mk.2 1600 (our first OHC car)

Hillman Minx (Cream/Green, bright green interior & loads of chrome.. 60s classic)
Triumph 2000 Mk.1 Estate
Triumph 2000 Mk.2 Estate
Triumph 2.5PI Estate (a classic wood facia trad British car… fast too)
Ford Granada 3000 Estate (a huge leap forward in ride/refinement at the time)
Volvo 145E (our first fuel injection car)
Morris Minor
Lancia Beta 1600 (New and only kept 6mths, forget the rust… remember that revvy engine)
Audi 100GLS (early 70s... the first of the 100 series and a truly superb car)
VW Passat Mk.1 1600 Estate
Rover 2200TC
VW Polo (the first Polo... bright yellow and a fun drive)
Audi 100 GL (late 70s type)
Audi 100 (1984…the first really modern car I’d say… 120mph, 35mpg and so refined)
Ford Capri 2.0 (1985, bright orange, top spec and a really nice car)
Nissan something (it was that forgetable)
Ford Cortina Mk.4 2.0GL
Ford Sierra 2.3D Estate (slug of an engine)
MGB GT
Saab 99GL
Renault Fuego 2.0 GTX
Fiat Uno Fire
Ford Fiesta 1.3

VW Passat Mk.2 Auto (everything doom blue and boring)
Ford Fiesta 1.6D (what a racket)
Honda Civic (another very very revvy engine)
Mercedes 190E (very solid era of Mercedes… sold on twice to friends before we lost track)
Rover 216 Auto (the first Honda inspired one... too small engine for an auto)
Rover 200 (the next series)
Citroen ZX 1.9D Estate
Citroen Xantia 1.9TD Estate
Citroen Xantia 1.9TD
Nissan Almera (oh dear)
Ford Focus

My dads is quite boring he hasn't had many cars considering he passed his test in 1971! He tended to buy cars from mates or get given them until 1991 when we hadn't had a car for 8 years so my mum thought it would be a good idea to buy one.

Any my dads cars

1956 Morris Monor split screen
1963 Mini
1969 Morris Minor van (had in the late 70's wasn't that old but had high milleage and nothing worked on it)
1968 Mini traveller - Was given to him had from about 81-84 and handed it back when it failed the MOT!

Then from 1991 he had cars none stop

1984 Lada Riva 1200L, kept breaking down, ate clutches and all the essentials failed. We got rid after a year.
1987 Lada Riva 1200l the guy who sold us the above one felt sorry for us and give us a good deal on a newer Lada. We ended up keeping this for 6 years. Sadly it was the car I went to school in.
1996 Fiat Punto 55SX - We bought this in 1998 and it felt like a Rolls Royce compared to the Lada.
1995 Ford Escort 1.6 LX Due an accident the Punto was a right off so we replaced it with this Escort. Was barely six years old, had FSH and cost us £1600. It was a fantastic car for the money.
1995 Fiesta MK3 1.1 - Actually my learner car but when my dad was well enough to drive again he ended up using it for a few months until the engine died. Bought in 2007.
1997 Fiesta 1.3 Ghia - Bought in 2007 for £850 with FSH looked like a new car at the time but is starting to rust now.

I think my dads a bit of a Ford man now because they always seem to end up being good cars, the suspension is always crap on them but machanicaly apart from that cheop Fiesta I paid less than a camera for they have been great.

Myself:
1995 Fiesta 1.1 - Bought when learning to drive for £350
1996 Fiesta 1.3 MK4 - Bought when I passed m test, rushed into it and bought a shed. Had it two months and got rid before it cost me any more money.
1999 Corsa 1.2 16v Club - Did my home work this time, was a very nice car until the head gasket failed :(
1997 - Fiesta - my dads was in my name for a couple of months for insurance reasons.
2010 Fiat Panda 1.1 Active in met blue - Not got it yet and it still may fall through :(

No cars in my family or relatives whatsoever. No need for a car and my dad commuted by train.
First wheels were my push bike I saved up my paper round money for.

I am amazed at the number of cars some get through.
I am retired and only on car # 7 (One was written off, one nicked/written off, both prematurely).
I usually drive my S/H cars til they drop so I have only sold one car ever.
Perhaps my kids ( who can afford ££££s) are following dad both of them still have their first (S/H ) cars for five years +.
 My dad had a .......... - RattleandSmoke
I bouight my first car in 2007 and already technicaly on my 5th car!! I have a four year finance deal on my new Panda though so I have to settle down now and stop all this buying and selling of cars.

No doubt my dads Fiesta will need replacing within the next year though so I get to some more car buying even if its not mine.

I think part of the reason I have bought a brand new car is I want something to last, buying and selling cars has taken far too much of my time over the past three years and taken me into areas of Greater Manchester I really wish I hadn't seen!
 My dad had a .......... - Boxsterboy
Richard W, I hope Citroen have rewarded you for your loyalty! Members of the CCC by any chance?
 My dad had a .......... - -
My Dad bought his first car in '64, before that it was the Velocette 350.

Hillman Minx.
Morris 1000 Traveller x 2
Marina.....rust finished this and the above.
Datsun Bluebird Estate...i got that for him from the auction, most reliable car by far but taxi rammed him up the back and wrote it off....think the accident shock wrote him off too.
Austin Princess 1700, sold on after he passed away some 18 years ago.

glancing through the above, I'll tell you what put a smile on my face....

This...

"after retirment

Honda Civic & various Accords."

Just what is it about Honda that attracts the retired folk. I mean they try with the VITEC and stuff to be youthful and sporty, but certainly until the current Civic landed just never managed to throw off that image.

In this case because Which? rated it as reliable and it was predicted good residuals. Also, apart from the Civic (and he only kept that a couple of years) they had a reputation for not corroding. The Vauxhalls, Fords and above all the Simca oxidised at an almost visible rate after year one.

Performance & driveability were way below his radar and he never mastered the idea of a "gearbox" but only took to automatics when he thought they were near manuals for economy.

Triumph Herald (I learned to drive in it)

Triumph Herald (he quite liked them!)
Vauxhall Viva
Hillman Hunter
Austin Maxi
Ford Escort 1.6 Ghia 3 door

All bought new (he must have wasted a fortune in depreciation). The Escort was bought in 1983 and he ran it until 1995 when he gave it to me after giving up driving as he approached his 85th birthday. I ran it for another 10 years and finally scrapped it in 2005 when it had covered 220,000 miles.

And my dear old dad passed away last month in his 100th year.

The car I lusted after as a yoof. If my dad had had one of them, I'd have been overjoyed. Mind you, where we lived, if he'd had one of them, it would have been nicked within hours, doing handbrake turns outside the local pub a few hours later, and on fire in the local woods shortly after that.

There was something about these cars for me. Especially the 16v which was just insanely fast. I mean as a 17 year old petrolhead, how could you not love this:

As I recall:

2x Ford Consul
Vx Viva HB Estate (white)
Vx Viva HB Saloon (dark green)
Escort Mk 1 L (pale blue - mum denies this ever existed, but I have seen photos..)
Vx Viva HC Estate (burgundy, P registered)
Triumph Toledo (our 1st 4 door, and therefore the first car to try to relieve me of my fingers)
Vx Cavalier Mk1 (white, never driven as dad passed away before delivery)

All of these were company vehicles, all were poor starters, only the last two Vauhalls even had a radio.

It occurs to me dad only ever drove rwd cars - I have only ever driven fwd.

Back as far as I can remember through until present. Some of the earlier orders might be wrong.

Vauxhall Victor
mk1 Cortina
Zephyr
Zodiac
mk1 Granada 3.0 GXL - first one I remember clearly. Lovely car, but needed a fuel bowser towed behind it! Ruinous to run, even back then.
Austin 1800 Landcrab - always had something wrong with it, but never seemed to break down completely.
Renault 12 - roll back sunroof would let enough water in during a good downpour to fill the footwells up! Otherwise reliable until the gearbox blew up.
Maxi 1750- underrated reliable workhorse, killed by rust.
Princess 2.0 HL - cruelly underrated - comfy, smooth, spacious, lovely ride quality, reliable
Allegro 1.3 estate - can't think of a good thing about it apart from we only had it 2 months
Ford Sierra 2.0 GL estate - learned to drive in it, insured on it at 17, started a soft spot for Sierras which I've never managed to fully shake. Dad had it years - brilliant car!
Ford Transit mk2 petrol
Ford Mondeo mk1 2.0 GLX - had it years, 200k when sold, still ran like clockwork.
Ford Transit mk3 diesel - he bought to move house and for carting stuff about while they did some work on the house. Ended up keeping it 2yrs. Never serviced, never cleaned, never let him down. Sold 2 yrs on for what he paid for it! :-)
Land Rover Freelander 1.8i - bottled it at the HGF horror stories and sold it.
Land Rover Discovery 300TDI auto - still has it now. Not my cup of tea, but reliable and very comfy.

 My dad had a .......... - mikeyb
Rover P1 (cant remember which one though but was the car I came home from the maternity wing in)

Capri 1600 GT - Dads brother had a body shop so he had a special paint job done on it - two tone yellow and chocolate brown

Cortina 2.0 MK5

Rover 2300 SD1 - My favourite, but oh so unreliable

VW Passat estate

Vauxhall Carlton estate

Saab 9000
 My dad had a .......... - BiggerBadderDave
The first car I remember was a Morris Traveller, but I only remember my mam driving it.

Old volvo estate reg EMA 808K

Escort van that he cut the side panels out from and put in windows and rear seats. He must have had a good reason, back in the mid 70s.

Marina.

Princess, 2200 HLS auto. Would love to have a spin in one of these.

1979 2.0l Cortina estate from new.

R-reg 504 7-seater estate

Newer 505 7-seater estate

1992 2.0 Granada (company)

Similar Granada on retirement (private - he loved them)

2001 V6 Omega. He had four of these - well, technically, just one but it was such a heap of crap and required so many replacement parts that we reckon we could have built four with all the bits he had to buy. Never completed a full journey without something failing.

Octavia VRS which he still has and loves and has given him a new lease of life. He's 73.

We had a neighbour like that. From the mid 70s started with a Beetle, then a succession of Golfs, a Jetta, a Vento then a Passat together with a Golf as a second car (IIRC). All from the same dealer as well. Talk about brand loyalty.
 My dad had a .......... - DP
My father in law was the same. From the early 80's he had 2 mk1 Golfs, 2 mk2s, a mk3, a Polo mk3, and 2 mk4 Golfs in succession. Currently breaking with tradition and driving a Nissan Qashqai, which hasn't put a foot wrong, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a mk6 Golf on the drive this time next year.

I'm late to this thread (great to have you back PU) but I can make up for it perhaps by a couple of cars (*) that I suspect no-one can match.

My father (1906-86) was a naval officer; his first car was a GN cyclecar (*), then several Fords before the war. Post-war a 1937 Wolseley - then he bought new and kept them for quite a time.

1951 Austin A40 Devon
1959 Austin A55 Cambridge (I remember both Austins fondly from my childhood - they always started, unlike so many Fords, Hillmans and Vauxhalls of the time, and I don't think ever let him down
1966 MG 1100, which he gave to me in 1969 for my 21st birthday
1969 Austin 1300 GT
1978 Hillman Avenger - for which he can be forgiven as the local garage, with whom he'd dealt for years, had gone Rootes / Chrysler).

A brave, good and kind man - RIP.

Mum is 92 not out - gave up driving about 12 years ago but she too had something unique - an AC Petite (* c. 1954). She certainly wished she hadn't - it was a 3-wheeler which made a Reliant seem like a Rolls in comparison. After that she had an Austin A50 (inherited from her mother), a Triumph 1300, an Allegro 1500 (one of the first) and after that several Ford Fiestas.

From what I can remember a Ford 105, Anglia, Audi 100, VW Scirocco, Fiat Strada, Cavalier sri, Renault 18, Renault 25, Saab 900, Volvo T5, Volvo S90, and now another Volvo - not sure which one though.

I remember when he bought the Cavalier he looked at a Citroen BX. I really wanted him to buy the Citroen - I loved the single wiper, levelling suspension, and everything else about it - and I've always wanted one myself since.

Two-year old Teal Blue Triumph Vitesse convertible GAR105G when he and mum met, how cool was that at 26?? Mum had a Windsor Grey Zephyr 4 AYN392B, and when I came along the Vitesse had to go...

Company wagons thereafter:
gold Granada/Consul estate 76/P reg
rosso red Cortina 1.6L estate KGP836T
champagne gold Escort 1.3L hatch SWF872Y
ceramic blue Escort 1.3 hatch C382DBM (in which I learned to drive!)

Back to privately owned:
sapphire blue Cavalier 1.6L hatch JVX609Y (later sold to me)
light green metallic Volvo 340 1.4DL auto hatch E4**EPP
silver Passat 2.0CL N8**GBH
jasper blue Merc C270CDI AvGd SE estate KW53***

Mum kept the Zephyr for 20 years, they only sold it when a clutch change was needed and Dad couldn't be doing with hiring an engine hoist again. Mum's only other car in my lifetime was a bright orange Volvo 244DL HGS5**N, bought in '88 and kept for 13 years.

As an aside, I have a startling memory for registration numbers, be they my own cars', my family's, friends', acquaintances', colleagues', even works vans and lorries. I can recall pretty much all of them going back 20 years or more and name the area of original registration on both old- and new-style plates. Surely there must be some use for such a "skill"...

Just thinking of the cars my grandad did, he know how to choose his cars. I don't remember them all he had so many, he only started driving in the early 70's and died in 2005 so he had a lot of cars considering he had been driving for just over 30 years.

Austin A30 (his oldest son sold it him) was a 1956 car I believe.
Ford Cortina (old G reg)
Ford Escort Estate (Auto) (old H reg)
Ford Cortina (another one, an N I think)
Ford Cortina saloon (I remember this has a kid, I think it was a V or T reg)
It all goes down hill from here!
Austin Alegro mk1
Austin Alegro MK2 (I always remember an A series in the garage waiting to go in)
Lada 1200L (pre riva) Y reg - Remember this car very well, he had it from about 89 to 91 and was written off in a crash.

Lada Riva 1200L special edition C reg (had a sunroof and a radio cassete, all original) my uncle then fitted it out with a FIAT 124 spyder steering wheel etc).

Montego 1600L - E reg - My uncles old car, he fitted remote locking to it and have memories of the massive MOSS security fob. After about 140k the engine and bodywork died.

Austin Meastro 1.3HLX 1982 Y - He only had this car for a few weeks and was very rare.

Montego 2.0 L - Basic spec but the car was very fast and my uncle built it using the chasis leg and other bits of the old E reg Montego. He bought the car for £50.

Nissan Micra 1.3 SLX - My grandad loved this car but my uncle knew the engine was on its last legs (it had over 140k on the clock) so had bought a K reg Fiesta for about £50 replace it. One of the last things he told me was I don't know why my uncle had bought that scrap heap for he has enough cars. He never realised that was going to be his car, sadly he died before. My uncle replaced the cylinder head on this car and he kept it a few years as his supermarket car.

I spent many a time stuck on roads waiting with my grandad for the AA (mainly in his Ladas).
