I'm thinking of selling my Ford Escort mk2 but am unsure as to the price I should ask.
I've had this car since new and it has been well looked after, always been garaged with
only a little rust, mechanically sound and is taxed and MOT'd.
The only down side is a leak it has in the engine bay so when it rains the water comes through onto the floor pans.
I did repair this several years ago but it is leaking again, apparently this is a common
place for a leak on the mk2.
I understand that the two door version is quite rare now and a lot are bought to convert to rally cars, something I wouldn't want to happen, I would rather it go to someone who would keep it as a road car.
Any ideas as to what I should advertise this car at? I've seen rustbuckets on eBay go for a thousand or more!

That would be 'condition 2' ish - there are comprehensive listings in Practical Classics, and it gives £1250 for your car - Condition 1 is given as £3000, so you might be somewhere between the 2. There is bound to be an owners club, so that is probably the best place to start.
|
I sympathise with your desire to ensure that the car stays "as is" but with the best will in the world I don't think it really matters.
I have a similar dilemma with my old pick-up; much as I love it I'm struggling to justify keeping it simply on practicality grounds. I'd hate to see it blinged up with the roof chopped, that lovely old V-6 engine slung onto the scrap-heap and replaced with a Chevy V-8 like every other bloomin' custom truck in the world (why are vehicles that purport to be different always the same?) and the interior blinged up like a tart's handbag; but if I'm totally honest anyone who gives me top dollar can do what the hell he likes with it once the money's in my hand because it ain't mine any more.
The consolation you'll have is that your old faithful will be giving an enthusiast a lot of pleasure, something which I doubt a lot of modern cars will ever do.

If you live in an area with many silver surfers maybe try a local Ford dealer who may want to promote a look how our vehicles last angle.
Or, try Ford themselves if it was a UK car and not one of the Ghia models from Germany.
|
Indeed the Mk2 in two door guise is the most sought after by the rally fraternity and half decent ones are commanding good money as they are becoming rarer and rarer. Mk1s even more so.
Have a look on Ebay classic cars. There are usually a few on there and that may give you some indication of the money they are fetching.

Have a look here and see if there is anything similar.
He is selling a Mk1 estate for £3500!

Do you really need to sell it? Didn't you ask this question a few years back on HJ or was that another person?
If I had a car for 30 year odd years I would want to keep it till I die but I understand circumstances get in the way.
|
Thanks for all your feedback on this.
Rattle - I probably did raise this question on the other site at some point. The thing is - I do want to sell it but I don't want to sell it if you see what I mean. I could SORN it but then it would be totally confined to the garage, with no chance of a run out.
This is the trouble with holding onto something (large) for a long time!
|
SORNING it might keep it more original than selling it though, as it will mostly get into the wrong hands be used for rallying and god knows what else.
I suppose the best bet would be to sell it to a genuine collector who would want to keep it original.
|
...or keep it.
:-)
Do you use it much Diamond? Strikes me that nothing's worth much at the moment. Maybe, just maybe, that will change again in time.
Suppose you could E-Bay it with a high-ish reserve if you really need to move it on but want the best price.
|
That is another issue, I want it to go to the 'right' person, but how would I have control over that?
No, I use it about once a month to give it a run out, it's taxed, insured and MOT'd. It does about 200 miles a year now! Up until three years ago it was my everyday car, doing 4000 miles in it's last year of being that.
|
As a matter of curiosity what model, engine size/type and colour is it?
|
What spec is it and engine size?
|
I love that Brown '77 Cortina on the affordable classics site. the XR4 looks quite cheap too.
Back to the Escort - Are people buying to convert looking at good condition, (relatively) expensive models or buying the bargain basement stuff because they are stripping it out anyway?

Google Mk 2 Escort rally car.
This is a typical result:-

Google David Stokes + rally.
I know his brother quite well. At that level of competition the front runners always have a few bodyshells "in reserve" for when the inevitable happens. Even a rotten, rusty old shell with a good roof has value.
Compared to the cost of the completed rally car the original starting point vehicle is peanuts.
|
I would be positively delighted if my old Mk2 Escort found a new lease of life as a rally car. I can think of no better late life for a car like that. I would sell on the proviso I got a ride in the finished article.

>>I would be positively delighted if my old Mk2 Escort found a new lease of life as a rally car<<
So would I.
I'm hoping for a ride in Mr S's some time this year.
|
Diamond, why not keep it and use it at weekends as a wedding car?
The novelty value might get interest and it will pay for itself.
|
That's what's happening in the derelict lots next to the restored factory building where I work. Apparently, scenes for the next Bond film were shot there a few weeks ago, and the BBC is in there today filming something else.
Those involved then eat in the café in our building. Looking out of an upstairs window last time, I saw a small group cross the car park, chatting amiably. Three were dressed in US desert fatigues and the other two were got up as suicide bombers.
|
I once blagged a cup of tea and a burger from a catering van at a film shoot.
Nothing to do with work, I just happened across the location.
They probably thought I was an extra.
|
Well he wasn't Daniel Craigs stunt double was he.
Did they fit those heavy duty boot lid spring assisters for you iffy?
|
It's a Pop Plus 1.1 in Venetian red.
|
Ah yes, I remember you mentioning this car before. It's the 1.1 Popular Plus with drum brakes at the front isn't it? Adds a whole new driving dimension to those used to the brakes on modern cars. If you're fond of the car I would keep it. If it's it really good nick it might appeal to a classic car fan.
|
>>Adds a whole new driving dimension to those used to the brakes on modern cars. <<
You're telling me!! Planned braking is whats needed!
I would be sorry to see it go after almost 35 years together, that's why I may well SORN it now.
|
This needs a 2.1 dohc cosworth engine and LSD with alloys, roll cage, fire extinguishers, and me driving it.!!!!!
It's a Pop Plus 1.1 in Venetian red. Let them do what they want to it. :-)

....and a pair of Cibie Oscars and Bi-Oscars !
