I would think so, once initiated it goes bang unless a delay is built in. It looks like they needed to break up the nearest bridge support, probably to control its area of fall.

yeah, they do it to control where each bit will fall and to make sure it does actually fall. Plenty of blown up skyscrapers that didn't actually come all the way down when they got it wrong.

Couldnt happen here of course, the fish protection lobby would have a fit.

I watched an old crane being blown up in the Liebherr yard on the banks of the River Wear.

The blast broke a couple of windows in the main stand of Sunderland AFC's Stadium of Light on the other side of the river.
