Not that I need to sell a car right now, but wondering in general which is a better option.

Autotrader ad costs £10 for below £1000 and £36 for over £1000 - which I think is quite unreasonable jump. This also leads to irritating ads where people list under £1000 and then adds a line in description "price is not £xxx but £xxxx".

Not sure how much Ebay charges.

So listing as classified ad on Ebay is cheapest option then (assuming car is worth over £3500)?

Depends what the car is worth.

I would think Autotrader for something newer, or Gumtree for older stuff.

I have been searching for months to buy a replacement Mondeo (I have what turns out to be a rare combination of requirements).
I have no idea what the sites charge for selling but this is my current span of searching....

I am obviously watching Auto trader and Ebay
plus the old
www.exchangeandmart.co.uk/

some possible less well known sites

www.vcars.co.uk/
www.desperateseller.co.uk/

Have you considered using the services of a professional auction buyer?
Provide him with a list of your requirements & budget and he will do the bidding for you.

We found our new (to us) Panda shopping trolley via Autotrader. It's very customisable by several different criteria, which I found extremely useful.
eBay is a much blunter instrument.

Unfortunately they are not suitable for what I want.
When son wanted a 5 year old SLK to my surprise they were not interested . They seem fine for common vehicles ( probably a lot newer). IMO you then get a very good deal. They find, vet and obtains good cars at good prices and you finish up saving some £££s , lots of time, travel etc.

It may seem strange that wanting one of the last of the old shape Mondeos is a problem sourcing one.
All I want is a ( not black or red) 2litre, high spec auto petrol Mondeo with full leather( black).
Xenons, Sat Nav and a sunroof would be nice :-)

Downsides.
By far the most are hatchback manual black diesels.
Only 10% are of Mondeos are saloons and few are autos.
So I am looking at a very small segment of the market already.

I only get 25-27mpg urban from my existing Mondeo so I do not really want a 2.5 or 3.0 litre version. These do often have All the extras :-).

I did see one that I was interested in many months ago BUT it was 50 miles from Aberdeen, ( a few miles from Surrey).
SWMBO was unwell and it went very quickly.

So many adverts have serious errors in them Grrrr!
Hatchback =4 doors?. Saloon= Estate?
Only one Xenon equiped version has even mentioned this £500 option and then it was "headlamp washers".
Adverts are full of dross to wade through but I have no option.

Get an estate Henry. You'll never go back to a Terry and June. ( Hey that rhymes ! Must've been in London too much, me old cocker innit son? )

No use for an estate and like hatchbacks, IMO they tend
to be noisier.
I will need new roof bars for very infrequent use but Fleabay seems to have S/H branded ones available.

I have seen and been driven in a car I fancy so watch this space.
Am planning to drive it on Tuesday when I expect to agree to buy it.

I am going a little up market and to hell with the cost and running costs.
My offspring are well set up with very good jobs and are earning much more than I was so I am spending some of their inheritance!!!
I do not change cars very often so this very low mileage machine should last a good few years.
It has quite a lot of toys so lots to learn.

Oh ok then, well, if you are going to push the boat out a bit why not take the chance to get something, y'know, sort of, useful...

Only pulling your leg Henry ! We wait with baited breath...

5 series I reckon...

I agree useful. I would like one but not this time.
But almost anything 7 years younger ( but still five years young) than my MK II Mondeo will be quite a change.
No tin worm, hopefully no funny noises, everything working, less rude remarks about my long serving saloon and hopefully SWMBO will accept it.
She thinks the Mondeo seats are better and the replacement does not have a sun roof :-(

All I need to buy is a set of roof bars and an immediate third key.

It does mean reverting to worrying about rampant supermarket trolleys and doors of adjacent cars, in carparks, being flung open.

I will divulge the model when I hopefully collect it.
I have no indication that anyone else is interested it it (Is it well overpriced ?)

When searching i find meself drawn to Ebay classifieds over AT.

Far more room in the ad, lots more pics, and the inevitable lengthy write up gives you the chance to judge the seller as well as the car, more likely to shoot themselves in the foot the more they write.

What is the seller not saying...thats usually where the downside of the vehicle lies, if there are paragraphs of waffle on every aspect of the car, but mileage, servicing or previous ownership is skipped over...there is the potential problem.

Ebay is for rare, specialist, the old or sheds.

Autotrader for the rest.

Con merchants and chancers inhabit both in equal numbers.
