Has a policeman's lot got happier since the days of Gilbert and Sullivan? The last episode of the recent run of Sherlock showed Detective Inspector Lestrade racing to the scene in a silver BMW 530 GT - about forty grand's worth of odd-looking executive bus.
Leaving aside (or not - your choice) the question of whether a DI could possibly afford such a conveyance, it seemed a jarringly overt piece of product placement. We're used to seeing Lexuses in incongruous settings (Martin Clunes's country doctor being only one example) but this seemed odder still. Maybe it was an attempt at balance, with that black Jaguar popping up at intervals on the bidding of the omniscient Mycroft.
Who else has seen TV put a car where nature alone would not?

Only when he retires. :)

I wonder how long D I Pulman in New Tricks will be able to keep her Saab convertible running?

Dunno... but there's a new series being filmed presently.....

Nice car though - I want one.

He'll be earning 45-50 grand.
He's having wifely problems so I would imagine he'd be quite happy to spend money whether he has earned it or borrowed it.
He could be leasing it for under £500/month:-

He could have inherited a chunk of money.
He could be corrupt.
He could be a fictional character.

Sherlock will have worked out the best option for his friend :-)
I don't care this fictional character drives a pugugly (sorry) BMW 5 Series GT. And who else has worked out how he survived the fall?

Gene Hunt had an Audi Quattro in "Ashes to Ashes". A bit more upmarket than a Cortina.....

Oh come on that's so obvious haven't you got a more challenging mystery?
:)

...D I Pullman in New Tricks...
Pullman is a DCS, isn't she? Should help to keep her in brake pads. Anyway, the Saab replaced a Volvo C70, so she doesn't keep them long. My money's on an A5 next.
Out of interest, how are the cars plainclothes officers use funded? Do they provide their own on a rank-based allowance? And would a Bergerac or a Morse really be allowed something so conspicuous?

>> would a Bergerac or a Morse really be allowed something so conspicuous?
I know of a senior officer whose work can require sensitivity and discretion. She drives a new Beetle convertible with a private numberplate mis-spaced so it's clearly showing her first name!

Not cars, but men's shirts. The shirts worn by some soap characters could never have been afforded by them in real life.
