Low emission zone - no sale! - Rudedog
I had my first experience relating to the newly introduced Low Emission Zone today (I leave on the very outer limits, it starts at the end of my road). I wanted a delivery made which should have been free for my area but after I had telephoned through my order I was casually asked if I was in the LEZ, once I had said 'yes' then the guy said 'sorry we don't deliver into that zone', therefore I was forced to cancel my order. Is this common? will I now have to state that I'm in a LEZ before I order, I imagine there will be a lot of lost business or was this company being over cautious about being fined.

I think you, and lots of your neighbours, will also find it increasingly difficult to get independant tradesmen as well. Combination of the LEZ and congestion charge will just not make it worth their while....

Zero keeps on telling us how well off everyone is down there, they will just pay the increased going rate. :-)

My nephew is a builder who lives just outside the zone .

He cannot afford a new van so refuses to go to any new job in the zone...... he says its not worth the aggravation.......

I'm sorry, but a builder who can't afford a 10 year old diesel van or older petrol van on London rates must be going wrong somewhere.

BB - A 10 year old diesel van or older petrol van does not meet the emissions requirements.

His van is a modern Transit which is perfectly acceptable transport anywhere outside the zone but as of now fails to meet the emissions requirements within the zone.

He simply sees no point in forking out many thousands of his hard earned cash on buying a new van when he does not have to in order to go into London when he has more than enough lucrative work outside.

Isn't the LEZ a diesel only scheme - no mention of petrol engines that I can find.

Most diesel vans registered after 1/1/2002 and all petrol vans comply with the LEZ. It's not quite as simple as that, of course. The TfL website for the details.

According to the info on the radio it's either £100 or £200 per day depending on the size of vechicle + CC if you venture into London, as I said I'm right on the boundary of Kent and Bromley so it seems a bit unfair to me as I'm sure the pollution isn't going to suddenly stop where the two areas meet so I won't see any advantage of the 'clean' zone!

Pollution has nothing to do with it - raising money has.

ISTR we keep getting fined by the EU because of the air quality in London. If this is a step towards avoiding this, so be it.

My mother was a nurse at the Evelina children's hospital in the early 50s. She tells me in a pea souper, before the clean air acts took effect, one could not see the ward wall clock from across the ward.

Lord knows what respiratory complaints were caused or exacerbated by the air quality then.

I thought these days all the kids' allergies were caused by *not* being exposed to enough harmful stuff? It can't be both, surely.

Half my daughter's peers at school carry inhalers around with them, thirty years ago it was just the one sickly kid per class.

I lived in London then and experienced Smog. It was caused by coal fires, thats why London is a smokeless zone and coal fires are banned. The LEZ is a cash raising scheme.

OK maybe a slight departure from original post, but I just had the thought about buying second hand vehicle within the LEZ, would a garage be able to sell me a small van within the LEZ unless it was compliant? how would I drive it off the forecourt if it didn't?

I understood it meant diesels only and the TFL site seems to confirm this:

If you want to drive a lorry, bus, coach or other specialist heavy diesel vehicle in the Low Emission Zone (LEZ) without paying a daily charge, it needs to meet certain emissions standards.

Ypu would be able to drive it off the forecourt but you would have to pay the daily charge......currently around £200 for lorries, I think.

The LEZ is the result of unintended consequences as we see at the moment.

Since 2012 any haulage firm with lorries coming up to 5 years old can't deliver within the zone.
This has come after a period of recession and belt tightening within the industry when firms are trying to hang on to vehicles longer to keep costs down and make a small profit.
