Hyundai - Veloster - one car, two sides - VxFan
One side of the car has two doors, the other only one door.

No, it's not April Fools day. The theory behind it is to make rear passengers get out the kerb side of the car - that is of course if the driver has parked up on the LH side of the road.

The 1st clip is the UK advert, but it fell foul of the ASA and they had to remove it.
Note that for the UK they had to swap some of the filmed sections, watch the driver as he keeps swapping from front left hand to right hand seats!

Another forbidden advert.

Can see why the second one was banned but not the first?

Re the car - interesting concept meaning they have to have different bodyshells for left and right hand drive unless its just a case of the door being "welded" shut.

Other than for marketing spin, I cannot see the benefit of only having one door at the rear.

Ah! that idea! Its just a variation on the AMC Pacer and the Ford Van.

"the passenger door was four inches (101 mm) longer than the driver's. This made passenger loading easier, particularly from the rear seats; and they would also tend to use the safer curb side in countries that drive on the right. Ford used this design element in the 1990s Ford Windstar minivan."

Its folly. Consumers don't like it and it makes production costs higher.

In the second video, why would she be sitting behind the driver if she got in from the other side? She'd also likely be in the front anyway.

The answer to the problem that would make more sense if you're worried about safety is to enable the child proof lock on the driver's side. That way someone can get in that side but not out without help.

Stupid idea for a car if you ask me having doors like that - just like the Mini Clubman is stupid.

MINI Clubman has it too (albeit on the wrong side for RHD cars).

An idea of stupidness only surpassed by pedal parking brakes on manual cars.

Totally agreed. And in the MINI's case, it's too expensive to engineer for RHD due to the requirement to relocate the fuel filler.

The whole stupid idea is an answer to a question that nobody asked.

Seem to recall the Mitsubishi Space Runner and original Toyota Previa had a similar arrangement with their rear doors, its nothing new.

I watched a guy help his genuinely disabled passenger into the back seat of their Berlingo yesterday.

The guy drove off, then stopped after a few yards - he'd left the rear sliding door open.

I know it's early days, but I can't help but think Hyundai have missed a trick here:

Potential room for a really good, low cost coupe (15-20 grand) in the market, and they hamstring it with this stupid door.

The money spent developing that should have gone into performance to ensure it can give the Scirroco et al a run for their money.

I know Hyundai's coupes have always been also-rans in the UK but they've done well with their bread and butter stuff in the last few years - I was hoping to see more than the Veloster seems to offer.

It's a shame. We very, very nearly bought a Coupe back in 2003. Both of us fell in love with a very nice 2000 X plate F2 'Evolution' model for sale at a local dealer. Cracking to look at, well put together, loaded with kit, and good to drive, it was only SWMBO's eventual decision that she wanted a soft top that eventually took us down the MX-5 route.

The original shape really was a good looking car, and still is IMHO. The one we were considering looked something like this one.

Good looking car utterly destroyed when they put the round headlamps on it.

What a bizarre thing! Just choose a 2 door or 4 door and have done with it. Or have 2 versions. Good grief!

It's a compromise. No need to have 2 and 4-door models, lighter than a 4-door with half the convenience.

If they produce it in LHD and RHD with the doors on the appropriate sides, I suppose it means they have the ability to produce 2 and 4-door models.

Perhaps they have decided to produce 2, 3 and 4-door variants. Novel!

So they have two models to produce, 4 door and 2 door. They have to double that for three door L/H drive and three door r/h drive.

The kids have occasionally persuaded me to drive ours from campsite gate to tent with doors open. Car doen't like it at all; the alert bong sounds and the interior light flashes insistently.

An idea of stupidness only surpassed by electronic parking brakes.

I find the electronic parking brake and auto-hold on the VW CC very good. I didn't think I'd like it but I do.

Sadly when I next get out of a car with a handbrake after driving it on a hill it will roll down the hill :-) I will mostly be driving my CC over the next 3 years mind.

I was very pleased to see that BMW have stuck with a conventional handbrake on the F30 3 series.

We had an electric parking brake on the Scenic. It worked well, but I just don't see where the value add is in exchange for all the additional complexity. It's not like a hill start is something most drivers struggle to perform for any period beyond their first handful of driving lessons.
