According to today's Moneybox - E-Sure have been bolting on legal protection without asking or telling their customers and then charging them afterwards - £25.00 a year they're pick-pocketing people for.

I've just moved away from them after only one year. I didn't like their attitude, and what's more, they plonked a £200 excess on their renewal paperwork for any repairs carried out at a garage of my choice.

Sauce...

I have to say the friend I have who had a motorcycle crash in France was insured with their bike subsidiary, their customer service and ultimate settlement was very, very good. I dealt with them whilst in France, they were friendly and very efficient.

MCE slipped a cheeky breakdown recovery into my motorbike renewal.

E-Sure had covered our A4 for a few years, but at last year's renewal they tried the same with me. A 'phone call later and it was removed - if it hadn't been I'd made it very clear I'd be moving insurers. Sneaky nonetheless

SWMBO's just got her renewal. They contacted her a couple of months ago to tell her she'd be getting free legal protection for the remainder of the current policy. They've included it as an extra in the premium.

There's also several sheets of amendments, the last being they've added automatic renewal!

I 'phoned them, also, but they wouldn't remove it. I even offered to pay a slightly higher premium, and they still wouldn't remove it.

I even emailed them, but didn't get response.

I now have an inferiority complex.

I wouldn't worry about it - they're a law unto themselves when it comes to consistency of behaviour!! I'm under no illusions that the problem will re-occur this July, and that they might not be so accomodating this time...

write a complaint letter (clearly marked as "formal complaint") to:

Customer Relations
Esure
The Observatory
Reigate
Surrey
RH2 0SG

Given your experience so far, you will be surprised that they deal with it very diligently indeed.

Normal common-or-garden standard practice.

Increasingly becoming common, as a result of the change in law to requiring continuous insurance. However, you will always have to be notified in good time that the policy is due for renewal and are free to cancel with current provider if that is what you wish to do.

They weren't sneaky to me but when I wanted 4 day's continental cover they wanted £4 per day (Fair) and a £25 Policy Amendment Fee (Ludicrous). I am now with SAGA, paying the same premium and have 90 days EU cover included.

The 1066 lot charge £35 for an address change plus a premium change if the move increases the risk. £35 for 60 seconds on a keyboard is unjustifiable.

Presumably the same as my recent Opus card add-on.

Don't let's bother telling the customer about it, let's just take the money until he notices.

Theft, in my book !

Amazon has started doing that sort of thing. If you order from Amazon France and click on 'free' delivery you find yourself signed up to Amazon Premier and 49 euros is taken from your account as an annual sub. If you complain you get a profuse apology and your money returned. I'm told the same thing happens in the UK, but it's called Amazon Prime and they take 49 quid.

Yep, same happened here a few years ago - I get my monies worth !

IIRC the default option is free next day delivery with trial of Prime (don't know about the £49). But you can select normal (slower) free delivery instead.

I took a look. It says you automatically get a month's free trial of Prime if you go for free next day delivery. If you don't cancel it within the month they take the £49.
Seems fairer than the French version, which doesn't tell you you have been signed up to anything. But Amazon France is a nightmare anyway.

That's what I signed up for - if you're a heavy Amazon user it makes sense.

I generally use Amazon's "ordinary" delivery and have found it very good. An recent order placed late on a Thursday night was in my hands before noon on the following Monday, for instance.
