Hi all,
In a bid to stave off the new year blues, I've constructed and populated a fantasy garage, but with a twist. You can have a number of cars, but one from each decade. For me, I don't have much interest in pre 1960, and I think that from 2000 cars are pretty same as now, so include 1 new car.
Here goes mine:
1960's: Jaguar E-type roadster 4.2 in primrose yellow with black leather
1970's: Mk2 Ford Escort RS2000 in white with black vinyl roof.
1980's: Porsche 911 turbo, black with whale tail
1990's: Mercedes E60 AMG convertible, black with beige leather
Modern: new Mercedes E350 CDI estate in black with beige leather and all the trimmings.
Nothing terribly exotic, but what I'd like.
How about you?
Alex.

Unfair Unfair
So much good stuff in the 60' 70's
1960's: Ok just sneaking in in 1969, is the Mk1 Ford Escort Twin cam (the 1500cc lotus engine)
1970's: breaking early 70s ground is the Ford Capri 3.0 litre GXL
1980's: The Blue Oval is now devoid of interest so its a good old shark nose - A 1982 BMW 635CSI E24
1990's: A 1994 Toyota Celica GT-Four ST205
2000's: 2004 3.0 litre V6 jaguar X type Estate.
However I cheated, proudly displayed on the front drive (and therefore an extra to the garage collection) for all to see is this stunning beauty

Your fantasy car from 2000 on is an X type estate? My god does it come wrapped in beige corduroy with a Tweed roof?
|
I think its a good looking car!
|
Bobby, be fair, if you had a Lancer estate, an X-Type might well seem something to aspire to.
|
Has your hund stopped using your Merc as a litter tray yet?
|
He has never been in it. He's more of an SUV sort of dog. Bit of a Chav really.

1950s: Mini mk1
1960s: Shelby Mustang GT500
1970s: Porsche 928S
1980s: Ferrari 288GTO
1990s: Ford Escort RS Cosworth Lux
2000s: A very late Peugeot 306 GTI-6

Humble to ultra-exotic. Everyday useable to completely pointless. Frugal to wallet bendingly thirsty.
Something for every mood / occasion. And I would love them all equally :-)

I'm in with "The Great Successor" comrade Jong-Un now, he's a very good Un.
I like Communism because ... it hands out wealth through rationing books.
|
Pure Communism maybe but power corrupts. Ever read Animal Farm ?
|
>>Ever read Animal Farm ?<<
Yea! - I've read many of his books,
I'm not really a Communist/Socialist/leftie/Christian/Pagan etc., etc. I'm just me really - a born again idiot!
:D

...Ever read Animal Farm ?...
RP,
I suppose you would say: "Four wheels good, two wheels better." :)

Good Post! I don't really remember any cars pre '80s, and couldn't legally drive until the late eighties, so nothing too early from me!
1970s: Porsche 911 Carrera RS in a proper '70s colour of some sort - green?
1980s: Audi Quattro (with a capital 'Q'!) in white
1990s: BMW E30 M3 Evolution in Lachs Silver
2000s: Bentley Continental GTC in dark blue
2010s: RR Ghost in grey
Now, where's that Admiral multi-car policy :-)

I think I'd rather have a variety, rather than just high-performance or exotica.
1939 Lagonda drophead
1948 Jaguar XK120
1955 Austin A50 (because one of those was my first car. It never let me down and I loved it)
1960s Triumph 2000 - much nicer to drive than the Rover 2000)
1970s VW Golf GTI convertible
1980s - one of those fine old Mercedes estates that go on forever
1990s Mazda MX-5
2000s Audi R8 Spider
2010s ....and I'd keep my current 2011 Octavia vRS estate to do all the work, the others being for fun.
|
Ah - my mid 80s "coke-bottle shape" Cortina 2000GT in purple velvet, black vinyl roof and Rostyle wheels!
|
I tried to make a list, but it turned out that just about everything I wanted came from the 1960s....
|
And i forgot one discreet car that covers 4 decades little changed and should have featured in my list.
Toyota Century.
|
My trouble is that I can see some virtue in almost any jalopy however eccentric or characterless. I quite like Sliding Pillar's list apart from the unusable modern supercars. I feel he might have included a model T Ford.
When it comes to it, if you have the loot and come across a good example of something nice.... But more than three or four pet cars would be a bit excessive. Greedy somehow. You'd have to spend all your time and energy keeping the damn things alive.
One could have a rat-look debadged Audi RS4 or RS6 for just hacking around in.
|
I was rather assuming one would have the money to pay for the running of the garage when I put in the McLaren and Bugatti. !
However, my preference is really for the older cars, and had I to be limited to half the list, would take the older half like a shot. The lorry would get used as well, it's surprising how often one wants to move big objects.

Yeah I remember it well, 1999 when last I needed a lorry.
