Jaguar - Jaguar which model and which engine - nyx2k
I've always wanted a nice Jaguar in very clean condition.

do i get an x300 or a nice 4-6yr old x350.

i was going to spend a lot more on a newish xj but ive now decided to spend less than 10k.

ive been told the x350 goes ok with the 3ltr engine. condition is more important as Ive not been well lately and i want my wife to be able to sell the car fairly easily when i no longer need it.
a nice v8 or v12 would be nice just to say been there and done that.

as its a Jaguar im not sure on the deisel model unless anyone knows diferent

jaguar XJ, and sell easily dont go hand in hand no matter what model.
Jaguar - Jaguar which model and which engine - nyx2k
i was thinking that so maybe spending less is the answer so if i pay around 2k for an x300 3.2 or 4.0 and i no longer can use it then its only 2k wasted if it doent sell.
ive seen a few for under 1k but i think they may be a little tired.
it wont be a long ownership in my hands but it has to be very clean and tidy

I have been in an early X350 2.7d a couple of times, smooth and refined and quite quick enough, I guess the alloy body shell helps.

A nice X300 would be my vote. Ive quite a few customers with them and they are sweet motors and reliable so Im told, though obviously heavy on the juice.

Im told there isnt much to choose between the 3.2 and the 4.0.

Of course the V12 is the one to have with the Daimler badge. Nobody uses picnic tables anymore, which is kinda the point of such excess.

In reality though, ya gotta try all teh cars and see which you like most, theres a lot of Jags at specialists so the right car at the right price should exist.

For resale its all about high spec and the right colour though the V12 may be hard to shift against the smaller engined examples.

If you've got limited time what about a long-term hire of a newer model?

Memory problems?

Couldn't you ask your dad to return the XJ-R you gave him?

i ave him the xj-r as its a bit tatty now and an awful colour.
it has 150k on the clock now the interior is showing signs of wear and i really want a nearly mint jaguar as i allways promised myself i would have on
i made a mistake getting the xj-r but its very quick but very very thirsty.
a late model x300 looks the part. ive been looking ar v12 daimlers but they seem to be a lot more expensive and i dont wany too much money tied up in a car thats useless for my family to use.
Jaguar - Jaguar which model and which engine - Stuu
I think possibly the best colour on the X300 is that sort of royal blue metallic with ivory leather. I know a 3.2 V8 X308 ( basically the same car ) in that colour and it is just perfectly balanced in the way it looks.
Jaguar - Jaguar which model and which engine - nyx2k
that's the colour id prefer aswell.
does anybody know the the order of spec on these cars.
like l,gl ghia etc. ive seen sport exec and soveriegn so what order do they come in.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaguar_XJ_(X308)

Most of the info is there on specs.
Jaguar - Jaguar which model and which engine - nyx2k
so much for my dodgy research.
its the 308 or 350 i want.
looks like the 308 at yr 2000 is looking good value.
thanks stu
Jaguar - Jaguar which model and which engine - Stuu
No probs chap.

See an awful lot of both the 300 and 308 at specialists in Classic Car & Sportscar mag and similar. They are usually the best ones about and likely alot less hassle.
Jaguar - Jaguar which model and which engine - nyx2k
due to health problems it will be my last car so i want a mint x308 with dark paint and cream leather is soverin spec.
may be a Jaguar specialist would be better but the story of the xjs that was bought from a jaguar indy has me a bit concernd as i need it to be perfect for 12months.
im not bothered about selling it after im gone as if i dont pay a load of money upfront then im sure my dad or brother will have it if it doesnt sell readily.

im really looking forward to this car so it has to meet my exspectation while in my ownership.

to kevin, yes part of it is memory because its a slow growing tumour near the pituatary gland and my memory thinks ive said something when i havent or vice versa. still safe to drive for now so want the car asap so i can drive it soon.
Jaguar - Jaguar which model and which engine - nyx2k
im thinking here that condition is more important than age so wont rule out an x300 model aswell.
off to see an x300 on 96 plate thats for sale localy for £1500 and am told its very clean and with 75k on clock and jaguar history till march 2011 then indy service in sieptember 2011.
in dark maroon with ivory leather and walnut cappings.

if the seats are showing sign of wear is it possible to do somethink to get them immaculate again?
Jaguar - Jaguar which model and which engine - Stuu
You can re-paint seats although id sooner search out a car with seats that arent worn.

The 300/308 suffers from wear on the side bolster on drivers seats where people get in, ive not seen many without it - even one I know with 23k on the clock has a little bit of wear there though it gets noticeable above 50k.

With ivory leather a good clean can usually rescue the look of it and its much easier to touch in white leather than grey.

As an aside, the XJ40 has very nice quality leather and on my K-reg 3.2 which had 153k on the clock still only had minor creasing on the side bolsters. Gotta love progress.
Jaguar - Jaguar which model and which engine - nyx2k
ive been offered lots of very cheap xj40's but really hate the sqaure headlamps.
just looked at a very clean x308 for 1500 but both fronts are very worn and it didnt feel like a jaguar xj should feel inside but bodywork was very clean and a few quid on fixing dents etc would have been superb but if i need to change seats instead of painting them it wont feel right if the seats dont match

This is some sexy car, nice example.

Love the interior too.

One thing puts me off them, according to HJ the ZF 6 speed box from 02 is sealed for life and no way to check or top the level, let alone perform oil changes, surely this can't be right.

You can change the oil on a ZF 6 speed automatic gearbox though there is no way to check the oil level.

for ease of mind it will go to an indy when i get it for these things to be checked and have been told to drain the oil in the gearbox and then replace the amount that came out. looks a bit scary drilling holes in the gbox sump though

Thats handy to know, though most peculiar oversight to omit even a 'blanked off unless you have the correct tool' dipstick hole.

I could certainly live with an XJ of this model, the XF does nothing for me, the twirling vents in the dash and the Zanussi wash cycle gear selector are not what i want in a proper car.
Jaguar - Jaguar which model and which engine - Kevin
The ZF 6-speed is supposedly "sealed for life" because ZF believe that they've built enough sensors and technology into the box to make it more reliable if it's left alone. Whether that is true or not is debateable.

It is serviceable by certified ZF specialists but opening the box without following the correct procedure will cause immediately identifiable evidence (damage).

It is a damn good box but did have a few software faults in the early days, most annoying of which was the changedown at low speed. If you approached a roundabout or junction anticipating a gap and switched from brake to throttle it would change down with an alarming clunk and take off like a scalded cat. Most un-Jaguar-like.

Early versions also had the X308 switch problem.
Jaguar - Jaguar which model and which engine - MD
A few years ago the principle of an indy gearbox specialist in Exeter told me there was no such thing as a gearbox that couldn't be checked for fluid level. Ya just needed the know how.
Jaguar - Jaguar which model and which engine - Stuu
I know what your saying, although you can get twin headlamps on the XJ40 as the lower spec models had them, so if that was the only barrier, you could swap them or find one with them.

I haven't yet had that cheque you promised to send me.

Joking aside, sorry to hear about the health problems.

thanks iffy, thats why its important that its the car i always wanted so that i can waft about in it like i dreamed when i was a kid and my gradfather had a new xj yearly.

i like the fluted detail in the x300 or 308 front lamps. cream leather looks great and i saw a champagne colour earlier and that looked good too.

Which part of the country are you in?

I can recommend a Jag specialist in Essex, who also sells a few. He's the sort of bloke you could ring and he'll keep an eye open or know someone with one.

Google Wyn Thomas........ either he or Mike Ferrari, his business partner, usually answer.

i used a similar bloke when i bought a 25k tvr griffif a few year ago. invaluable knowledge and saved me getting my fingers burned.

will call him but he may not want to deal in small amounts but if an immaculate can be found the budget can be moved a bit
