Just got my reminder for our 1.6 Focus. Printed price on V11 differed from actual price to renew. Now I know why the extra. Not a printing error :-(

The Guardian headline should have said carbon dioxide emissions rather than carbon emissions. When talking about chemicals, accuracy is of paramount importance.

How right you are L'escargot - 10/10 that man!

What makes me laugh about this road tax lark is that my Mazda is just £125 a year despite the rather obvious fact that its emissions are far worse than my wifes Sirion ( 151 g/km ) but my wife pays £155 a year. Its such a silly system as it really does penalise you for having a newer, cleaner car. Great idea that.

My 1.8 Almera auto gets hit ~ Band J - 187g/km CO2 = £235 pa = :(
I think I'll emigrate to Iceland :)

Don't the majority of the emissions occur during manufacture anyway? If everyone ran their cars longer then you'd save a lot more in the long run as modern cars are clean anyway so there is little point continually changing a car for a 'slightly' cleaner one when manufacturing the thing is probably far , far worse than just running what you have.
The irony is the catalytic converter increases CO2 emissions over the equivalent non cat car. What should have been done is to produce more efficient engines with better combustion so they wasted less fuel in the first place rather than bolting on some honeycomb of rare and precious metals with a finite life and negligible use while cold.

My opinion exactly!
biggest problem (IMHO) we are facing is that today's cars are fast becoming 'white goods' not only in their driving dynamics (I've driven cars where a washing machine is less bland) but also that they will soon be uneconomic to repair, think of ECU's at well over £1000, not worth spending that on a 7 year old car, IF the part is still available.
If you only own new(ish) cars, and think that wont affect you, think again.... the residuals will drop faster than they do today, meaning you will lose more - faster........

It's just a scam to fleece even more out of us. The simple fact is, the more miles you do, the more tax you pay. A further tax based on CO2 emissions, the size of your engine or whether your granny died on a Tuesday is not really justifiable. Well not to me anyway :-)

My R reg Escort is £190pa - my old W reg (Euro II emissions) 7.5t lorry, which still covers 1,000 miles a week, is £165pa. We used to joke that it would be allowed into the London LEZ because it chucks out so much smoke the cameras won't be able to see the number plates.

So ... The road tax band for my 1.8 auto Almera is only one band below a Range Rover 4.2 V8 Supercharged 4 door auto.
:-o
|
I checked my car in www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk and it indicated that having larger diameter tyres resulted in a higher carbon dioxide emissions rating.
|
I use www.parkers.co.uk/#
My previous car - Focus 1.6 Zetec auto is the same as my present 1.8 Almera auto.
It seems that Darling wants us all to drive Kia Picanto's :(

Whoever came up with the new bands seems to have missed a step out:
How come the bands increase £20,£30....£90,£110,£125
Surely there should be a few bands in the 30-90 range!
