For all those who thought an in car camera was overkill & paranoia I have just had an excellent result!
Driving thorugh a town late at night some holigan thought it would be an excellent idea to try running at my wifes car & kung-fu kick the doorswhilst i was driving ( 20mph) ! fortunatley for me he caught his toes in the drivers door handle which slammed him down in the road & injured his ankle! but i didn't stop as I felt it unsafe to do so !
Drove striaght home ( 4 mins)& rung the Police who within minuest arrested this Yob with the help of CCTV in the town. My main concern was that if the event was captured on CCTV it may of looked like a hit & run. The police duly arrived within minuets & I was able to show them the incar camera footage ( roadhawk) showing the hooligan running diagonally at the side of the car from the opposite side of the road!
The guy was identified & he couldn't escape that one ! & thanks to excellent police work & speed the guy confessed the following day when he decided he couldn't cope with the pain in his ankle anymore! Now has a 10 year record for criminal damage.
The police were extremly helpfull & amazed & amused by the in car camera & as an excellent witness I think helped in drawing the whole event to a swift conclusion & made me feel quite smug! thats one criminal who didn't escape!

Excellent result with door handle I would say ;-)
|
Brain dead folk like him should be taken out of the equation...... permanently.
|
Shame he didn't break his foot. Or his neck.
Good result though.
|
It would be better safer and cheaper to move somewhere else.
|
As the OP seems to have more than his fair share of "incidents", and the fact I have never had them, then no its not a stupid remark.
Would you live where people launch themselves at your car? Never happens where I live.

We can't ALL live in leafy Surrey, Z. This sort of thing has happened to me in the past and I live in (reasonably) leafy Cheshire - thats North of Watford for those in any doubt.
|
Good result ID!
I've had mine for a wee while now, since you talked me into it in the old place. I'm pretty chuffed with it. Here's an example vid from mine:
www.youtube.com/v/Nv6_gRYWLIs&hl=en_US&fs=1&
Crap quality comes from the screen capture software i used not the camera.
Typical though, the one day i didn't have it running, some numpty tried to run me off the road, nearly succeeded too.

Actually not too bad...I just got distracted by the Xmas Tree Air Freshener swinging about in the corner :)

Lol it's the vertical facing vent on top of the dashboard was blowing it about. Also the dashboard's not really curved, just the fisheye lens on the camera.

Craig, I have asked before whether it is possible to export the video directly rather than do a screen capture, and was told it was (it seems to say the same on the Roadhawk or DogCam site - not sure which).
Obviously that would just be the video, and not the map, accelerometer stuff.
Just wondered if you could confirm that it is possible, and whether there is any chance that you would be happy to post an exported video, just so that I could see the quality before I bought,
|
SS it is possible to export directly but it's in a format hardly anything seems to be able to play! Screen capture seems about the easiest way i've found.
|
Hi Craigp
Never leave it disconnected! I picked up a new car the other day & didn't put the cam in before i drove home & on the M4 a pallet came of the truck in front & just stood upright in the road just as I hit the pallet full on! & just watched it explode in front of me!
I couldn't belive that all i suffered was a chip in the screen from a nail & a grazed bumper & number plate! phew. i did however get all the details of the lorry

Can you pre warn me of your routes IJ. I drive about 15k a year and have done for 36 years, and never had the amount of bad luck you do.
So to be on the safe side, let us know in advance, i can programe your routes out of my sat nav.
|
Well Zero, i do cover 2.5-4k a week so obviously will encounter more events! I have to admit the pallet incident was really bad luck & I was really angry with myself as i could have chosen a cross country route that morning & that was my plan. It would of looked spectacular on camera though as the pallet just exploded into fragments. If you don't want to follow me around then just delete your sat nav & stay at home!
|
There are idiots everywhere, even in "nice" areas.
I posted some pictures on "another" forum of the £800 worth of vandal damage done to our old Scenic one evening in 2008. This happened in a quiet, middle class residential street in Knaphill, Surrey. Hardly The Bronx by any stretch of the imagination.
|
Exactly, and guess what? thats the one time the camera in your car is not running.
|
A guy on a skate board grabbed the back of the van some years back. I BRAKED rather firmly. Hilarious.
|
Quite right DP. This guy was just as drunk as a skunk! Last time I parked in Oxted a hooligan went down the side of a car with a key! happens anywhere!
|
Don't believe the OP said it was his town, Zero?
"Driving thorugh a town late at night"
From that, you extrapolate that he lives there?
|
>>Drove striaght home ( 4 mins)
Seems he was quite close.
|
Really pleased to hear how that worked out for you. It does go to show how that kind of evidence can be very valuable.
I have been putting off getting one, but I do plan to.
Would be great to see the footage!
|
>>>For all those who thought an in car camera was overkill & paranoia...
It's a personal thing but I still do. Despite the lack of footage I would have had exactly the same result as you did with the Police.
|
>> Driving thorugh a town late at night
Which town?
|
Video looks good though would be interesting if the quality was good enough to identify number plates, say for a hit and run?
Also I assume the speed is GPS but could this be held against you if police reviewed or would you be able to claim that it hadn't been calibrated?

Quality can be seen on this example
www.youtube.com/v/SZbQ_KOGBcQ&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0&hd=1
showing footage that caught out a garage mechanic going for a 125mph joyride in a customer's Vx Monaro car.

Ok heres a foible for you.
There is an accident, caused by you, captured by your camera.
No other witnesses.
Its a serious one, could mean you gaining points and loosing money.
Its not obvious from the aftermath who was to blame.
Do you make the footage of your camera availble to the police and other party?
What would insurance company think of such action if you did?

It's a fair question, but perhaps it is the same as "would you admit to the police that it was your fault?"
The right thing to do would be to admit that it was your fault, so if you had the footage, the right thing would be to hand it over.
I guess it would come done to the individual, regardless of whether they had a camera, to decide if they wanted to do what was right, or what gave them the best result.
Somebody probably shouldn't install one of these if their driving is likely to get them in trouble, and they are not prepared to hold their hands up to their mistakes.
On the other hand, if you can get rid of the footage, then capturing it in theory means that you can share it if the other guy is at fault, and withhold it if you are. Not that I am condoning that.
If it was me, I would like to think that I would admit it when I was wrong, but I would have to be put into that situation to see how I would really react.
As for the insurance company, I am not sure what happens if you admit to an accident. The footage would perhaps be different, because you would probably be breaking the law by withholding evidence - whereas there is no legal compunction to admit guilt.
Can't see how the insurance company could be seen to endorse withholding physical evidence from the police.

agree fully

The real question on the tip of my mind, it's not fully answered for me yet & i can't completely decide:
Does my camera adversely impact anyone else?
Some details:
It's recording all the time, even in the big public multi storey car park i use most days.
It does clearly capture a good number of reg plates that drive into view or maneuvre around my car. It's clear enough to normally tell main features of the drivers -- male / female, hair & clothing colour etc.
It's not advertised on my car nor obvious that it's present & also recording (noone knows basically).
I do review some of the footage every so often.
EDIT: i also post some of the footage to youtube, whilst the 1 clip i've posted was carefully chosen, if i wasn't careful in future and shared freely, would that change anything?

I imagine you hold the copyright to the images captured by your camera, the same as if you were using a still or video camera.
If so, there is no reason you cannot publish whatever you have filmed.
