If I replace tyres when it still has few mm tread left (3-3.5) what happens to those tyres? Are the tyres shops allowed to sell them as 2nd hand tyres? In that case, do they offer some discount for used ones towards the newer tyres? Reply to this message | Report message

Proper, big fires are now a rarity. But the last one I covered was at a tyre recycling plant outside Durham City. It was formerly the Colway Tyres factory. Lots of black smoke, as you may imagine. Reply to this message | Report message

Friend of mine used to work for a recycling firm in Dorset that invested big money in machinery to turn old tyres into doormats and similar. The last really big fire I covered was in a candle factory. I've never seen anything like it - burning wax flowing out of the building across the car park and torching the cars! I visited a tyre recycling factory. Tyres converted into some form of rubber underlay for carpets. Not surprisingly, everything was black with tyre dust. I used to collect waste tyres, both commercial and car, from Ivybridge, Runcorn, Scotland and Wem to bring back to the Fen for recycling. They were turned into grains of rubber used to make Astroturf which we then collected and delivered to schools and sports fields. They certainly do some miles once they are taken off the car! Basically, they must be more than 10 metres away from a water-course; 50 metres if its a protected water-course i.e. one that directly or indirectly supplies drinking water. When i worked at Kwik-fit for a short while some 20 yrs back we sold the "runners" then was £5.00 per tyre to the second hand tyre shops plus we ripped you off and told you there un repairable and again we sold them on too. Taxi drivers we knew a few of these they bought the runners off us. Today it still happens as new tyres come with 8mm 3-3.5 will sell well. Reply to this message | Report message
