Good time to buy a car? - PeteW
With Christmas fast approaching and my bank balance finally looking healthier, is now a good time to cut a deal on a new (to me) car?
I imagine dealers are looking nervously at their targets and households eager to release some extra cash?

Not sure what to look for - maybe the subject of another thread in next few days....

It doesn't make much difference when you buy a used car.

The best time is the right time for your circumstances.

I've always thought that buying a car in the weeks leading up to Xmas is likely to result in a better than average discount. It's worked for me in the past.

When buying my convertibles I make a 'short' list of 15/20 within a 150 miles radius during late Oct/Nov.
In late Jan, when the credit card bills hit the mat I begin ringing round. Some have been part ex'd, some sold privately, others decided to wait until Spring. Those unsold I investigate more, crawl under & over, and potentially put in an offer.
Its worked for me since I bought my first Spitfire many years ago.
And always buy on condition from nice people.

I was speaking to a neighbour the other day who is a manager in one of Glasgow's Car Auctions.

He said the prices on cars just now were eye-watering low and he could not believe many of the prices that dealers were accepting for their stocks.

That's not a bad rule of thumb whoever is selling whatever.

snotty? unpleasant?...walk away.

When buying a car I always ask myself:

Is this the kind of person I would like to do business with?
and
Are they likely to be helpful if I have a problem?
and
Are they nice people?

(also true in employing/being employed).

Seems to work well over the past 60 years so hope for the next 50... :-)

As for buying a car, the time is when EVERYONE is in despair and dealers are going bust.. About 9 months time I think.

Noticed lots of 58 plate Focuses at main dealers for not much more than £6k. That seems very good value.

Are prices likely to rise after the new year though? We don't know when we will be in a position to buy a new car yet either a few weeks or a couple of months.

Being at the banger end of the market I've noticed that the effects of the scrappage scheme have worn off, There are some very good sub 1k cars about once more.

Seen in the last couple of weeks, a nice looking W reg Focus diesel for £600, no idea of mileage though and a Hyundia Elantra auto, 50k, full service history and beautifully clean for £850.
