Have you got parking sensors? Were they factory-fitted? If not, does your insurance cover you?

I insured my new i10 with Allianz via a broker, stating that it had front and rear sensors as extras. Cover was given so that the car could be registered but there was some discussion about who fitted the sensors. I found out that they were dealer-fitted, with Hundai parts, under a scheme approved by Hyundai, who did not fit them themselves. I informed the broker by letter. I picked the car up this morning and got home to find that cover had been withdrawn by Allianz - not factory-fitted, you see.

This is about as daft as anything I have heard about insurance. Cover was given by another insurer but it cost a lot more.

Mad in as much as paying for parking sensors must make you a more careful risk, although I do question why you would need them on an i10 :-)

I don't. She does.

Depends how they look at it. They could say that if you need parking sensors then you are more of a risk because you cannot park without an aid.

My wife managed to reverse into a post and push the reversing sensor through the back of the bumper.

And what constitutes factory fitted? The Outlander has rear sensors as standard but I strongly suspect they are fitted at the UK distribution centre, as are towbars and electrics.

What nonsense.

I would also have hoped that a broker could have squared that with the underwriting department of Allianz too - it sounds as if it's been classed along with the fitment of Fandango wheels.

I discussed a similar problem with my Winter tyres - supplied to BMW spec and fitted at a dealer LV didn't baulk at the prospect. I think it's more a company issue than an industry one.

Well, they're gonna have a field day with my/my wife's i10 then. It's got reversing sensors fitted independently, it's got mudflaps that I FITTED MYSELF, there's a car seat cushion to increase the seat height a bit, it's got INDEPENDENTLY BOUGHT car mats! and, to top it all, I polished it with expensive Collinite polish to make it extra desirable to thieves.

I was even thinking of fitting a louder horn as the present one wouldn't spook a highly strung mouse.

No wonder premiums are rising - with thugs like myself about.

Edit..did I mention the All Season Tyres?

I had a Stebel Magnum horn fitted to my Roomster - cracking bit of kit - fitted by a Skoda dealer - bad boy eh ?

This was going to be the hooter of choice, RP. I think it would need a separate power supply from the fuse box and was going to use the same fella that fitted the sensors - especially as the front bumper might have to come off to get access to the existing and the fitter seems to be able to take cars apart (and put them back together again) with remarkable ease and efficiency.

The Yeti has a cracking horn, makes this one sound distinctly feeble.

Trouble is, the i10 is nearly new and is an auto and is making a distinct drone/resonance at 3250 rpm under load. I noticed it from new but hoped it would go away - but it hasn't, and don't want to do anything more to the car..........although the likliehood of them replacing it for one that doesn't drone at 3250 rpm isn't good, I suspect? (Bit of a nuisance though as it equates to a, GPS true, 70 mph and is very wearing on the motorway).

Apologies for drift...back to the topic....

I might try that on the motorway then. I estimate I'll be doing over 110mph in 6th gear. Anyone willing to take the points for me?

I have even checked out what happens when you press the key in on the CC when you're driving.... the engine stops just like when you turn off a normal ignition. Not sure I'll do the speeding test though. I bet low profile tyres on a concrete motorway section get a little noisy too.

As if the looks were not shocking enough.

The broker reckoned that Allianz could be tricky but theirs was the best quote originally. The dealer has since contacted several other companies, none of whom see any problem. However, the doctrine of "the utmost good faith" means an insurer could use this as an excuse to reject a claim, which is why I made the position crystal clear to Allianz.

Hmmmm........does this mean contacting my insurers whenever I fit my roof bars ? Bonkers !

I suppose if these things are going to keep you awake at night then you should report them. Most people wouldn't bother and I can't imagine the insurer having any joy if push came to shove re a purely cosmetic or safety item.

Dealer fir used to be common on Japanese cars - it's not very long ago that A/C was dealer fitted to Honda Civics, and the "stanadard fit" Cat 1 alarm on the Clio we had was fitted at the import centre (if I'd known that, I wouldn't have bought the car, they made a right mess!).
