renewal is through, been quoted £346 by the incumbent - Aviva - down £3 from last year.

A "gocompare" search reveals the cheapest at £290 - Hastings direct

then a bunch of brokers

LVE @ £311

Saga @ £448 (confirms to me they are a rip off for the elderly)

Up to quin direct @ £951 !!!!!

Aviva fits into the bottom third. Probably stick with them

Direct line came in at £429

Hi Zero - we're obviously on the same task at the same time but for different cars. I am with e sure and the renewal has come at virtually the same as last year - £166. Confused came in with 17 other quotes under £200. SAGA said £180 but gave me a £15 discount for letting them quote for house insurance I told them I didn't need right now.

Conundrum is whether to go with Saga who give 90 days Green Card or stay with e sure who don't but, would charge me £13 for 8 days in France and, if I don't pay it now with the annual premium they will charge an extra £25 policy alteration fee if I ask for it in May2012 when I might go.

I'll check the small print and probably go with SAGA to have a no cost option to go abroad if I want to.

BTW - do you or any other form reader have a link to or info about free standing legal insurance?

Directline came in at just over £500, when I told Admiral what they had quoted me the person on the other phone was shocked and said "I really don't know how they can do that".

18 months old car, Manchester post code, business use, 6k pa, 3 years no claims but a previous claim for glass damage.

My dad pays just under £400 on the Fiesta, with 15+ no claims, 41 years licence, business use, 8k pa. His car is a 14 year old group 6 death trap, mine is a group 1 18 month year old car, so that will make a big difference in the premium.

No. Virtually no difference.

Its who you are (age, sex, motoring history,) and where you live that makes up 95% of the premium calculation. Untill you get to the more powerful exotic cars that is

Agree with that, I've had cars ranging from insurance group 2 upto 13 and it has made very little difference insurance quotes, although some companies have demanded ~40% extra when changing cars part way through a policy.

Other than exotic cars in high insurance groups some insurers appear to dislike 7 seaters, probably because more passengers means more potential personal injury claims in the event of an at fault accident.

I just did a blind quote as a new customer with Aviva

£369

Cant beat them up with that then!!!

Decided, I 'll let it continue, need to do nothing. Call it validated inertia.

That's a fair assessment Zero - I won't a few quid change my company, LV suits my needs with the mods I've made to the car at no charge (mSport wheels and winter boots) and free use for volutary jobs.

To me its worth £50. So if a a different company can beet my existing renewal quote by more than £50 they get the business. If not its far less hassle to just keep the existing policy.

Changing companies takes time and then there is hassle chasing up documents etc.

2 quotes within £5 but one gives free Green Card for whole of the EU for 90 days makes for a pretty easy decision. I shall join S*x And Games Abroad

Having reached the qualifying age last year, I thought I'd give them a try this time. Not only was their quote ridiculously high (about £440 as opposed to the £270 I eventually paid) but I now get pestered with their advertising guff through the post, which I specifically asked them not to send.

Top Tip HM! If the letter they send you contains a reply paid envelope fill it with all their junk, plus anything else bulky you can fit into it and post it back to them. They will have to pay the postage on it. Works for any junk with reply paid envelope. If there isn't one, type your own and post it with no stamp at all - they will then be charged the postage plus a £1 surcharge from PO. Such fun!

Article in DT re Increasing Insurance Premiums

Comp & TPF&T are on average £14-1500!!

Our immediate family of 4 households has 8 cars -£2600 covers all the cars,
X6, XC60,2 x GolfGTis, RaV, Xtrail, IS & the old Xedos an average of £325 per year

SWMBO & I are 65, 3 x sons and DiLs all in 30's

How can the average be £1500 per yr per car

If the figures are true (are they the average of every single premium paid in UK?) then obviously a lot of people are paying thousands of pounds to balance the premiums paid by me and Clan Bairn!

My wife's been with NU/Aviva for 20 years now. I do check the renewal premium from time to time but its always within 'inertia' distance of the lowest charge out there. And they've been fine on claim handling (she slid on the ice a couple of times).

They gave me full no claims on my landcruiser when I opted out of the company car scheme (was a named driver on wife's insurance). I stayed with them for a couple of years, then went to Adrian Flux for quite a saving. When the AF renewal went from £350 to over £800 I ended up going back to Aviva last year.

When I bought an MX-5 this spring, they again gave me a discount equivalent to full NCB. The deal this time is that if I leave after a year they'll tell the next insurer I had one year no claims. If I leave after two years they'll tell them its full NCB. Sounds pretty fair to me.

I've put two of the cars into the new multi-car policy (the landcruiser will join the other two when its renewal comes up). I hope the combined policy continues to be competitive.
