Buff Government envelope thru the letterbox this am! Great excitement as I thought it might be my winter fuel allowance and I could go and invest it on fast women and slow horses!
It was my new style pink V5. A Leaflet inside explained that it was to prevent the misuse of blank V5s, stolen from Swansea some time ago. There are no obvious security measures, holographic stamps etc. Then I found this on the BBC website.
"They also copy the genuine vehicle's log book - or V5 form - by using one of thousands of blank DVLA documents that went missing some time in 2006." I wonder if they ever found out who took them and how much they got for them
So 5+ years to sort it out! Stable doors and a horse come to mind.

Does this mean we are all in for a new one even if no changes have been made?
|
That was my case. Blue V5 issued on new car 2 years ago, to the day, and replaced today with a pink one. This gives me an idea that they are issuing new ones on the anniversary of first registration, to spread the load. That or it is a coincidence that the new one arrived on the car's "Birthday"

They've been issuing them for ages on cars that are newly changed owners, mine for the bike turned up this morning. Twice as thick as yours as it's bi-lingual.

What's welsh for motorbike?
"Lloudd-sheep" or something?
:-)

if they cant read english, welsh drivers should not be allowed across the border.

I photocopied my V5 a few years ago.
The copy came out with 'copy' or something similar printed all over it.
Quite clever, although my black and white photocopy was unlikely to be mistaken for the original.
|
That's an interesting technique iffy. I photocopy mine as a matter of course, as a back up and I never saw that. Probably something to do with being told I have a cataract which should be done before Xmas!
|
...and I never saw that...
Perhaps I'm getting mixed up with my driving licence.
It was definitely one or the other.
|
Iffy I think it is something embedded in the plastic bit of the licence. I have copied my new V5 and the only difference, apart from the colour, is the presence of one of these new Quadcodes/barcode thingys.
I have asked my MP to tell me why it took DVLA so long to bring in new V5s and whether anyone was charged with the theft/loss of thousands of them and, if not, why not.
|
Another re-issue?? They did one a few years ago because their registered keeper database was such a mess.
I have no idea why they'd buy blank paper. They should only be printing the whole lot in house with special printers that *only they have*. Then it is much harder to forge them and there are no blanks to steal. Ditto other documents. Moving it all externally was an idiotic move. I can only assume the contractors were the paper handling equivalent of Group 4 security ie complete muppets.

There is no such thing as a "printer that only they have" If there was it would be stupidly expensive. Its always been down to the paper, even for the banknote printers.
Its not "blank paper" - That's why it was stolen.

Pointless too.
I scanned my passport for a copy and the coating over the picture rendered it unprintable, as it is supposed to.
Took me all of 15 minutes, rescanning at a higher resolution, fiddling the contrast and then sorting it out in a graphics package, to get a printed result indistinguishable from the original, bar what it was printed on.
As the man said, that particular horse left the barn a few years ago. Playing around with watermarks and silly coatings doesn't even rate a 2 on the "inconvenient to work around" scale these days.
|
I have now heard from my MP Re loss of V5 Blanks and what is being done with regard to prosecution.
A precis of the reply is
"Following the theft of documents returned to DVLA's printers the Agency had to wait for the outcome of the Police investigation of the scale of the problem" Why were they being returned anyway I wonder?
"Durham Police's investigation is ongoing"
"New style V5 is considered to have adequate security features. It has been issued since August 2010 to new vehicles and when changes are made to existing vehicles and to remaining vehicles when they are licences or SORNed"
So, 15 month investigation and still no charges or court action!

Probably something in the printer software (more and more copiers are digial now_.
once tried copying a banknote and after printing half an inch it stopped and then printed a " print aborted" message.
It could tell it was a banknote - a 10 Euro Note.

...Probably something in the printer software...
Could well be, because I'm sure I've copied a V5 since without that happening.
