"A deal to make Top Gear satnavs voiced by Jeremy Clarkson has crashed - after BBC bosses said it breached editorial guidelines.
Around 54,000 devices had already been made, and many of them delivered to shops, before the blunder became apparent.
Executives have decided the deal with TomTom ran against editorial policy which prevents the show's presenters endorsing motoring products.
The satnavs will still be sold but BBC Worldwide - the corporation's commercial arm, which struck the deal - will no longer make any profit from the product.
Its proceeds will now be given to Children In Need, removing BBC Worldwide's commercial interest to get round the problem"
Strikes me this is slightly at odds with the fact that Jeremy et al can endorse various products like supermarkets, sell their own DVD's and the TG magazine itself is crammed full of adverts (the main reason I stopped buying it!). I realise the magazine doesn't actually feature ads being endorsed by the BBC but still...

Bit odd really, I mean Hammond advertises for a supermarket with a lot of petrol stations, they plug MPH live / Top Gear live which is a commercial venture, they all have had motoring related books out at some point.
I know that these are not related to BBC wordwide, but I fail to see that the average joe blogs will diferenciate between them, and if they like a product on Top Gear then it gets some of the best publicity in the business like the Fiesta episode. If that wasnt viewed as an endorsment of the product then I am not sure what is?

'NO, NO, the other left, you Mexican lady's front bottom...'
I can hear it now. For piffling copyright reasons, Tomtom buyers are being deprived of great art. Shame!
