Maybe one for BB.
Being a Three Labrador family, don't ask, the Susi Jimny is now unsuitable to the transportation of these three delightful ludicrously expensive garden wrecking machines!! A mate wishes to dipose, or even dispose of an 'N' reg 4.0 litre Jeep limited or something or other. They guys in the know will know what I mean. 15-20 mpg. Various 4x4 modes I believe. I have only had a glance, but from the initial look it doesn't turn me off. The Jimny only returns 25 mpg on a good day with a light foot, being auto as well. Any known issues with the Jeep??
Thank folk............................Martin.

SiL, a genuine car buff but not yet 30, has a 4 litre Cherokee modified to run on LPG. It's a bit crotchety sometimes but usually in minor ways, and he claims that running mostly on gas it's the equivalent of a car that does 30mpg on petrol in terms of fuel costs.
It's an auto and quite a pleasant vehicle although steering and handling leave quite a lot to be desired. But I suppose you'll be used to that with the Chimney. They all have leather upholstery I think. Unless you are panicking about the six quid gallon like everyone else I should buy it if it's a decent example.

I read somewhere that they have fragile back axle's which can be damaged by using the 4 wheel drive on hard surfaces. I expect the Jeep forums will have info.

They arent known for being massively reliable but if its cheap enough and you can have a repair reserve, it is atleast a car you know something about. Worth going through old bills to know roughly what the yearly expenditure is. Nice cars when new though, just a bit 'american' inside - all plastic wood and cheap leather usually.

You've reminded me about fragile bits Navy, my mate had one of these back in the day Diesel mind, the petrols could drink faster than the geezers sitting on the benches near the Grosvenor centre N'pton.
He had transmission problems of some sort and i can't remember what it was, i know he never thought the thing was a patch on his previous Trooper and Shoguns for hard work.
Think you might be looking at 14 to 16 mpg unless you are the next Saint Martin.

Its a money pit. It will make the labs look as cheap as chips.

Ok - listen to this. If your labs are reasonably fit, and you are a builder then........
Mitsubishi L200 with a truckman top. You can even claim the VAT back on it.

Apparently the Jeep to go for is the Patriot diesel. VW engine and much more reliable than the Cherokees I understand.

they rot badly
especially in the sills
prod carefully everywhere
dammed ugly things
tyres must be new and wear together or you wind the axles and transfer box up till it goes pop
sit in it first
i liked it when i drove a left hooker before they were even imported
would i have one now
no way

Went past Rufford/Bilsthorpe area today (not your area but someone may know the garage and link a website for perusal) on the A614/A6097, passed a 4x4 specialist dealer who had got some very tidy unbattered Hilux mk4/5 pick ups with hardtops at around 4 to 6K.
You could do worse Mart.

If it was a 4x4 id be drawn to a Grand Vitara TD 5dr.

Unless they are very small labradors I wouldn't bother with a Jeep Grand Cherokee. They are cramped inside and have a tiny boot. The (none Grand) Cherokee is even worse. The petrol Grand Cherokees I've driven in the US I've managed to effortlessly get down into single figure mpg territory, the diesel I drove in Germany was better, I got around 17mpg.

Car Mechanics did a buyers guide to Jeeps about 6 years ago.
Bellboy's attitude was the same as mine. A hole to pour money into...
Do NOT buy the VM diesel version. They lunch cylinder heads.
And rear axles..
POC.
