Tax Disc Site says:-

Our Electronic Tax and SORN service is temporarily unavailable due to enhancements currently being made to the system. These services will resume within 48hrs from 18:30 04/10/2011.

System upgrades are planned and done at weekends by Banks, Insurance Cos etc etc - downed late Saturday and up and running on a Sunday.................it could only be a Government body that could shutdown mid-week for 2 days...............

We were promised a better Civil Service aimed at reducing waste / being more efficient.......this is a Government Cash making machine - why close it down???

Well they're not going to lose money are they. We won't be searching the web looking for an alternative tax collector.

Don't know what the upgrades are but I would have thought for this system, this has got to be the quietest time & therefore the best time to do any upgrade that needs system down time.

Any upgrade that needs 2 days shutdown is something very significant, I would expect it back up before the 48 hours.

they probably have a good handle on when peak demand is during the month, I should guess its a pretty sharp curve towards month end.

You also, IIRC, get five days' grace from the start of a new VED's status to cover any possible holdups.

IIRC you can't apply online after your old one has actually expired ie. now is too late for this month.

It might be 'badged' as government but I'm pretty certain its run by a private co - possibly Siemens.

Its IT is outsourced to IBM, most of it anyway.

Trying to link through Direct.gov returns a technical error message.

Need to tax mine form 31/10 but not paying until October's salary is un the bank.
