Laser tyre tread monitor - Rudedog
Did anybody else see the article in one of the London free papers about a new tyre tread depth monitor (?developed in Germany or USA) that maybe brought into catch drivers with low tread?
Apparently the monitor is set into the road and measures the tread depth of all four tyres as you drive over them using a laser, this is then sent to inspectors further down the road. I'm sure it said that each monitor was about £48K, but I don't know how portable it would be if it has to be set into the road.

If you down to 3mm tyre depth it's time to change for your own safety and other people on the road.

Is this the gadget you mean?

Note in the story that the Police bosses are "excited" about it.

kerching.

Motorists only have themselves to blame though, the number of cars i follow and you can see the lack of tread in the grooves as the wheel turns, i'd have a field day if i was a traffic plod and wasn't otherwise snowed under with paperwork.

Wonder if the plod will now start to show the same sort of enthusiasm for nicking the seemingly ever-increasing number of cars with faulty lights.... which, unless I'm mistaken, don't need any specialised equipment to detect?

Pause for excuses about removing half the bodywork, etc etc.

Wonder if the current craze for driving at night with sidelights only is actually down to people having both dipped-beam bulbs blown and either not noticing or not caring.

I don't even bother nowadays to point it out to others. I've had too many responses from 'its MOT's not due for months' to 'what's it got to do with you?'.

Just taken my lease car to KwikFit with 2 mm on each wheel.

We are only allowed to use them!

They refuse to consider a change until spot on 1.7mm because they won't get reimbursed by the fleet co.

I point out that when I do a thousand miles a week a journey can make the difference between being legal or not.

The lease companies money skimping could lead me to significant points. Actually, it won't. I will have to refuse to drive the car as I don't think it is roadworthy and then hire a car. A few pounds saving on their part will cause more than several hundred in hire costs.

Wish I could name and shame the lease co!

Or, find an empty road, traction control off ... ;-)

It's not always the lease co, though I expect that is the default asumption in their pricing. I've worked for companies where the company policy was to change at 3mm, and the leases were negotiated on that basis. Not had a company car for a few years though, so whether that still goes on I cannot say...

Why bother. My local one has a nice abrasive, concrete forecourt.

1.Assuming FWD, handbrake on, scrub the fronts.

2. Best tyres (ie. new) go on the rear.

3.See 1. above. ;>)
