Went to fill up this morning – regular weekly task. All pumps in use so pulled in behind a scooter. When the rider emerged and drove off I was interested to see how much he had put in. The answer? £2.02p !! It works out at almost exactly 1.5 litres/0.3 gallons. Has anybody ever seen a smaller amount of fuel purchased?

Ask Rattle, he used to fill up weekly...... ;-)

FWIW my Honda Lead holds just over a gallon, which means I fill up about once every three or four weeks.

But £38 in last week thank you very much! Although I expect that to last another 7-10 days.

I once put £3 in :) That in my Corsa though.

20yrs back used to put £2.50 in to get about 60 miles that was enough for a weeks drive then to work.

Now it's £30.00 a week.!

When I got my first car, 1966, you could buy 8 gallons for just under £2.00 (£1.88 to be picky)
In Saudi Arabia in 1970 you could buy 10 gallons(US) and 200 cigarettes and get change from £2.00

My late uncle Dick (by name AND nature) would only ever put 1 gallon of petrol in his BMC J4 van at a time,

I tried to explain to him that if he were to put 2 (heaven forbid!) gallons in, it wouldn't cost im any more,

He was a 'head case' anyway - all his life.

About 6/7 years ago my venerable Ford Escort suffered a petrol gauge malfunction (it stopped working) and I calculated my fuel level on the basis that I got at least 20 miles for each pound of fuel purchased. I'm now getting about 6 miles per pound (in an admittedly more powerful car).

The heading should, of course, be MiniscUle Petrol Purchase.

Not quite, the correct spelling is minuscule.

As my dictionary explains: "The spelling 'miniscule' is a common error, which has arisen by analogy with other words beginning with mini-, where the meaning is similarly 'very small'."

I had to check it.

Have you enabled the spellchecker in your browser?

The one in Firefox is not 100 per cent accurate, but it's a good first line of defence.

SWMBO doesn't do filling stations.

Many years ago, I broke my ankle and couldn't drive for a while. I showed her exactly what to do to put petrol in. I heard she drove up to a pump and spent ages faffing around before finally going to pay. The cashier told her there was a minimum delivery and she hadn't met it. She went back and finally managed to dispense just enough to satisfy the minimum requirement.

After that she'd load me up and make me hop around on my remaining one good leg to fill up.

She still doesn't do filling stations!

I blame her dad. He'd point blank refuse to use self-service filling stations and would drive miles out of his way to find one that wasn't. His wife (a non-driver) got fed up with that and found out how to use self-service. He'd also ignore newly built by-passes and would continue to use the old roads on routes he'd travelled before.

I actually composed my post in Open Office and then 'copied and pasted' it and, yes, the spellchecker did throw up 'minuscule' but I didn't notice it. Silly me!!

I like the Firefox checker because it works in the forum's text box.

Having said that, I've just noticed it doesn't like the word Firefox. :)

The spell checker doesn't work in the subject heading, only in the text.

Consider yourself duly reprimanded scousehonda, and retire to the naughty step for the rest of the evening:)

I once drove into a filling station and put £2 worth in a Silver Shadow.
I was within sight of the docks at Felixstowe, though and I didn't fancy pushing it the rest of the way.

Better safe.....etc !

2/3p per gallon I recall. That's £1 buying 9 gallons...

I was student running a 1929 Riley 9. It was bought secondhand - three years old:-)
