A work colleague is circulating this on her sons behalf. Happened this morning.
I'm trying to work out how the Clio was propelled so far forward assuming its handbrake was on, unless they're made of paper!
There's no sign of the airbag going off in the van either which seems odd.

It's definately going to cost the geezer with the smoky Transit Connect (almost certain) van when they old bill present this bit of footage to the court.
Assuming he lives in a house, otherwise untouchable.
I wonder if the impact popped the handbrake off?
|
Agree with one of the youtube posters that it doesn't look like a great place to park.
|
...that it doesn't look like a great place to park...
Yes, by the guy in the dark hatchback who left his car in the mouth of the T-junction with its driver's door open.
He seemed to be gesticulating towards where the Transit had come from, suggesting he may have had a recent encounter with it.
|
It all looks terribly staged to me.
|
I can assure you Zero it is not staged.
The man who gets out of his car saw incident but unfortunately rather than follow the offending van he stops and subsequently contacts the householder.
|
What was the damage to the Clio? What did it finally stop against?
And for the general forum, what would the difference have been if the car had been left in gear?
|
They all looked on the wrong side of the road to me, I certainly have my doubts about it.

How was there so little damage to the front of the van? I know a Clio would make a lousy paperweight but even so, most modern bumpers splinter if they encounter a cutting remark. Yet the van driver is able to move off fast enough to leave a nice cloud of smoke. There's something here we're not being told.
|
Not sure what you think you're not being told.
A colleagues son parked his pride and joy on the side of the road.
White van drives around a parked car (off camera) and in doing so fails to see the Clio and BANG! Maybe the driver was on a mobile?
Clio is shunted forward but I'm not sure what it came to rest against but I know it didn't hit any other car (that would be an insurance nightmare, wouldn't it?)
Owner is mightily angry and creates a posting on youtube and makes a flyer to pass round friends and put in the window of the local autospares shops/newsagents. He even contacts the local paper and they send the deputy editor round next morning to 'do a piece'. They have now printed the article on the front page of the local rag today.
Why was it filmed? The chap is a gadget freak and because of his car being his prized possession he set the camera up to film it for security purposes. The camera was motion/sound activated. He even went back over the previous days footage to see if he could spot the van again in the hope the driver was local.
There is no conspiracy - no ulterior motive - its not connected in anyway to 9/11 or aliens. Its just a chap who has been f over by a hit and run driver.
|
If it was his pride and joy he should have left the handbrake on. Also its time lapse, there seems to be a long delay between the event, and people actually doing anything.
I am sure you are right about its validity, but to the unknowing it screams "stunt"
|
Hmmm strange, there almost appears to be someone sitting in the drivers seat of the clio ! and the rear light is on in the video, unless its the hazard lamp flashing triggered by the alarm.
Van seriously on the wrong side ! even for overtaking a parked car unless he thought the clio was also driving around a parked car.
My point of view is , I wouldn't of parked my car across a junction ! and definitely not the wrong way round ! facing oncoming traffic ! its wrong
either way i hope they find him ! should be easy with the roof rack on it ! he will get done quite hard for not stopping !
|
You should have mentioned it was in Essex. The article even has estuary punctuation.
};---)
Of course we sympathize with someone who's suffered the consequences of antisocial behaviour; most of us know the sinking, impotent feeling on coming back to a scraped bumper or a dinged door.
On the other hand, if you insist on parking a car on the street (or on a combination of street and grass verge) in a street that wasn't designed for it, and directly opposite a junction too, then you are not really playing the game and must at least admit some contributory negligence.
|
I thinkif it wasn't for the knowledge of the OP, we would all be looking at this and thinking its a stunt, or set up or whatever.
Or to put it another way, if he was sitting in his car and then showed this video as proof of a whiplash claim, I think there would be huge doubts placed on its credibility.
Did the handbrake snap instantly or was it not on? Assume it wasn't left in gear?
|
If I didn't know his mother personally, I too would have thought the footage was rather conveniently filmed but its not.
Yes the handbrake was on apparently - not a very good one it seems.
And yes, he perhaps shouldn't have been parked that way round but we've all done it at some point but its hardly his fault as such and for a driver to drive into the back the way he/she did suggests that driver is a menace and a danger to themselves and others. Probably not insured either. They must have been distracted - probably reaching for The Sun that was sliding across the dashboard.
|
Maybe its me. But I cannot see the air bag in the van deploy.
|
Wouldn't necessarily deploy.
I have heard of numerous people, including my sister, who have had crashes and airbags have not deployed.
In my sister's case, she was doing 60mph and T-boned a car that came out a side road in front of her. Both cars written off, but her airbag didn't deploy.
In the video it is very hard to judge the speed of the van. In theory its going fast to push the car like that, but neither the van nor car seem too badly damaged.
|
How often have we seen vehicles with the SRS light illuminated, particularly with the less discerning driver?
|
Google shows that there's a six-page thread on the forum at cliosport.net concerning this incident. Unfortunately - because all that chavvy indignation might be funny - I can't get in to read it, at least from a mobile browser. I'll try again from a PC when I get home.
Meanwhile, a post on another thread there indicates I'm mistaken.
clios arnt chavy tell ya what is a 1.2 corsa with stainless exhaust n blacked out windows with a 17 year old behind the wheel who has his seat reclined to the point where ya lying down lol

Sure enough there's plenty more. cliosport.net likes you to register to view forum content but if you google the words 'ugent' (sic) 'Clio' and 'written' you'll be able to view Google's cached versions of the detail pictures of the damage.

Dinged my bumper this morning, no damage done, other car drive off down the grass verge ??

The latest:
Car's a write off. £5000 worth of damage done apparantly all underneath. Probably twisted chassis. The car's only worth £3k - £4k.
|
Thats not good - hopefully he was insured fully comp?
|
Luckily he was. I think the replacement will be a sensible family car because he's about to become a dad.
|
lets hope he parks the pram in a more suitable place.
