Manchester to Buxton - best route? - RattleandSmoke
I need to start driving more, as I've just about had it with the slow trains to North Wales but the route involves the M56/A55 which will be very busy when I plan to go in the summer next year.

I have thought about driving to Buxton as it doesn't involve motorway driving, but what is the safest and least involving route?

I plan to go via Stockport and Hazel Grove then continue down the A6. However when I get to Whalley Bridge is it safer to continue down the A6 which is a slightly longer route but I imagine easier to drive down, or the A5004 which looks a bit windy to me?

With not much experience of country roads which is the least challenging route?

I plan to drive to Wilmslow sometime this week via Stayl Road to give me some country road experience.

Just want to be able to drive next year when I go to Anglesey, just sick of lugging all the camping equipment on the train and having to buy pillows when I get there etc.

Oh my God.

Rattle, sell your car and rip up your driving licence.

Once you leave Hazel Grove you'll be fine, and you'll enjoy it, used to use those routes years ago working me way across to the Notts coal pits when we had industry, not the B road you mention mind, but try it and see how you get on, it'll be fun.

The A6 from Stockport till you leave the metropolis is hell though, a ridiculous number of traffic lights, much pushing and shoving, could you work your way round and avoid this section, i would if possible.

I'm not sure 'fun' is something that Rattle is looking for.

My car dealer is in Stockport (technically in Heavily) so I am used to the hell which is the A6, although it never does my blood pressure any good! Not sure if there is a much easier way round it, unless I went via Cheadle and Poynton then back up North towards Hazel Grove.

Get yourself to Macclesfield, then turn left up By Arrighi Bianchi furniture store opposite the railway station and go over the Cat and Fiddle. A lovely road, now limited to 50 mph. Perhaps a challenge which may boost your confidence once you've cracked it. I assume you manage to get yourself around Manchester OK which is an accomplishment.

Enjoy!

Take a deep breath and go for it, remembering to breathe a little along the way. ;>)

Ha, maybe one day but yet. I remember going down there with a mate a few years back, to be fair it was in an death trap of a 1992 Fiesta which can ran 3 cylinders, but I am not ready for that yet!

Is a lovely road though, but need an easier route rather than a scenic one.

For gods sake rattle, you are a motoring wimp.

Just get in the car and drive the thing there.

(Hand on shoulder) Rattle... roads are not "easy" or "difficult", they're just, well, roads. In fact, the A537 is a pretty easy drive, it's a wide open space without many junctions or distractions apart from the top-notch views.

Seriously, just go for a drive kiddo. If you get spooked at a big junction, just turn left (the "easiest" option) and keep going for a bit longer. Doesn't matter where. After half an hour or so, stop somewhere for a cup of tea (or a bottle of Pepsi, whatever), then turn around and go home.

The prospect only seems scary because you allow it to be. Seriously, it's not.

I've done the just turn left thing before, but the fear of that is to end up approaching an even more scary junction :p.

Rattle, Next Sunday, I am going to step off a plane, jump into a hire car (A fiat 500 twin air I hope) and drive for three hours across the centre of Sicily.

I am sure you can cope with the Car and Fiddle.

Limited? 50 is unnecessarily slow, but is the usual response which limits the majority but is meaningless to the outlaw tendency. Nothing wrong with the road over the Cat, but the antics of the loony element are unpleasant. You do have to be aware of bikers, some of whom seem to regard 50 as a target to be added to the base layer of 100mph. How do they get away with it? They turn round in the middle of the track by the Cat and re-run the race back down to Macclesfield.

Your tyres will have developed flat spots by now, old son.

Piccadilly Station and off on a DMU on the scenic line to Buxy !
