Vauxhall Astra F - Getting to the MOT station - percy
Looking for a car for my lad, his mate has an R reg diesel Astra apparently in reasonable condition but off the road and Sorned.
So it is without MOT, tax or insurance cover.
I haven't got a trailer to put it on so what is the easiest/cheapest way to get it to the MOT station once I've had a knowledgeable friend look it over?
Thanks in advance....

If you have a pre-booked MOT then you can drive to the MOT centre to get it tested. If it fails you won't be able to drive it away. You will of course need insurance to drive on the roads.

What you do about tax I am not sure. You cannot tax without an MOT. Catch 22. Maybe you need to get someone to collect the car on a low loader? Do you know anyone who could do this as a favour?

I suppose if you're confident it will pass an MOT, you could then tax in immediately but don't drive to the post office. You'd need an insurance certificate/cover note and the MOT in hand. I doubt you could do this online because the insurance and MOT details won't be available to the DVLA.

Is it legal to tow it there maybe? Not exactly practical if the MOT station is a long way I suppose.

You can drive it to a pre-booked test without tax or MOT, but insurance is required. You might be able to drive it on your own policy if it covers driving other cars (*). Make sure you have the MOT recorded with the garage with the reg number, as if you see a Police car it will ping the ANPR on all counts!

* much debate in the other place about whether the car needs tobe insured in its own right - some policies make this stipulation, some (mine at Elephant included) do not.

MOST policies require the car to be owned by someone else-not you.

I think you'll find you can, unless it fails on something 'dangerous' which will make it illegal to use on the road.

>> If it fails (at the MOT garage) you won't be able to drive it away.

You normally can drive it to "a place of repair"; your house, or another place (even your house and then another place).

Drive it there - it's OK without tax or MOT, but you'll need insurance, of course.

ask the local mot station if they would collect and test for you
they wil be all legal to do this

Thanks to all for advice; Bellboy seems to have the right answer, I'll talk to my mate who doubtless has a favourite MOT tester in the area.
I thought I had the answer with the 'Day insurance' companies but they seem to only take on motors less than 10 years old. There must be some that do 'classics' but an Astra is hardly one of them....
Thanks again, if I succeed I'll report back.

many aspects of the Road traffic act do not apply to a car being taken to a pre booked mot test appointment (eg tyres lights etc )it would only be an offence if there was a defect that was likely to cause danger and you were aware of it you are allowed to drive to and from a pre booked mot test appointment AND to and from a place for repair to achiev that end, the dangerous warning would leave the onus on the presenter to determine wherther it was fit to drive all the mot station does is give an opinion and it states in the lower right hand corner of the vt 30 red fail slip the word to that effect an opinion. one must beware that you are not missless into leaving a vehicle for repairs that you would not have were you able to take the vehicle away if in doubt call the local VOSA office they know what you can and cant do

A bit of punctuation etc wouldn't go amiss next time. I was going to do it for you, but my mate makes a mean slow gin which I've partaken of in some style and I can't make much sense of it. Maybe tomorrow. smokie, Mod
