 Mr Clutch - cambelts - a900ss
My wife's car is due a new cam belt. Mr Clutch are over £100 cheaper than any indie price I've been quoted (£305 vs £410 for a pug 307 2.0 petrol).

Anybody have any comments on the work of Mr Clutch as I have no idea.

Thanks.

Are you comparing like with like? OE quality belt kit with idlers (and water pump if required on your engine).

Good question ON.

As to competence, Mr Clutch will be as good as the staff at that particular branch. SOme will be OK, some might not be.

I wouldn't touch a chain for something like that. Though I know an indie round here I wouldn't trust either;-)

Cambelts make me nervous. I've had three of them let go on me over the years with expensive results. None due to neglect either. Try to avoid them now. Especially at my mileage. I'd be changing them far too often.

I wouldn't let Mr Clutch change any cambelt on any car of mine.

Tried a main dealer? They quite often have good deals for older cars - my VW garage was cheaper than an indie for the Sharan

Local Pug dealer is advertising cam belts FROM £179

Agree with mikeyb.

I remember when belt change time came up on our old XUD engined 306 D-Turbo, the local Peugeot dealer were actually the cheapest. They had a deal for cars over 5 years old.

I think we paid £199 all in (this was back in around 2004). Cheapest indie came in at £250.

£20 for a Volvo belt. It takes an hour, I do it myself.

I bet Mr Clutch doesn't re-check the tension after 100 miles.

Didn't they get a slating some time back for dodgy clutches, all fast fit firms are fine for the fast fit race but leave everything else to your local indie/dealers.

Fortunately I don't have a cambelt, but if I did I would have it replaced by my main dealer. L'escargot usually has something to say on this sort of thread, but he hasn't been around for quite a while now.

Probably gorn back in his shell.

I think he said a while back that his existing shell was on the market, and he was looking for a new one. I rather miss his early morning posts, but he's probably busy.

I wouldn't touch them either, as these places* often let oinks do the work with not enough experience, and also would it be OEM?

Saw an offer for a cambelt for £150 at my local dealer, so I will just treat it like any routine job.

*Referring to fast fit places in general, not Mr Clutch specifically.

And what a doddle, i confess to a 244 belt snapping on a car i'd only just bought.....in mitigation m'lud.;)

Went and got a belt, found the belt was marked with corresponding marks on the sprockets, it will only line up when all is correct, brilliant piece of engineering, and a non interfence design, should be the standard.

Modern belts i wouldn't go near save for 3 litre 4 cyl Toyota Diesel in 4x4's, they give the 244 a run for simplicity and possibly better it for ease of access.

I would want a proper garage of some repute and standing, probably main dealer, to replace mine now, if the majority of modern belts fail the result will be expensive, i want some back up.

I think Mr Clutch are a franchise, so there's probably no consistency between branches.

Just as well as the one on Moseley Rd in Birmingham was awful, they're closed now.
